Default can't make nvidia.ko

Ive tried to install the latest nvidia drivers but always get an error saying it cant create nvidia.ko (or something similar)

Ive searched everywhere for an answer but cant find one for.

My distro is LFS and im using kernel 2.6.11.12
Ive tried doing the --kernel-source-path command but it still wont work.
Ive never needed the drivers before but Ive recently installed xorg and want to use kde. If I go into run level 5 my monitor goes into standby. Are these drivers a *must* to go into run level 5?

Here is my log file.....

Code:
 '2.6.11.12 SMP preempt PENTIUM4 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4'
   should be '2.6.11.12 SMP preempt 486 gcc-3.4'
hmm, seems like your played with your kernel-source...
so either:
- get the _old_ kernel-source...
or
- build the new kernel and boot it!

EDIT:

@nettlama:
no gcc-3.4 is fine...

From the log, here's the problem:
-> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko':
-1 Invalid module format
nvidia: version magic '2.6.11.12 SMP preempt PENTIUM4 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4'
should be '2.6.11.12 SMP preempt 486 gcc-3.4'

It looks like you're not using the same gcc binary as you used to build the kernel you're running.

many thanks for the super fast replies!
I think you broke a world record there.

I got that first log from running the nvidia driver in a chroot environment. I rebooted into my run level 3 linux and ran without the --kernel-source-path and it worked! I was just expecting to get different log.
What can I say... it didnt before!

I still cant test my x install, my monitor goes into standby. I thought it was the nv driver, maybe not.

Once again many thanks

if your monitor goes into standby, but your pc doesn't freeze then you should check /var/log/Xorg.0.log ... maybe your frequencies are too high for the screen!

Ive had a play around and if I use the xorg.conf from my host distro (I use chroot a lot) I can run startx no probs. If I edit the xorg.conf how nvidia says (ie change nv to nvidia etc) it doesnt work.

From the Xorg.0.log it says nvidia is trying to use resolution 1734x1344 (or something close, cant remember now!) which is bigger than the 1280x1024 my monitor can handle.

How can I change this default?

please... attach the whole xorg.0.log ...

have you ever tried to change the resolution (you can do that in X, by pressing ALT and CRTL and +)

acutally, I wanted the log... but your xorg.conf looks _empty_...
you should generate one with e.g xorgcfg

anyway I attached a _improved_ but incomplete xorg.conf. try it.

Many Thanks
Ill give it a whirl.

My xorg.conf might be a bit emtpy because my Linux install is empty.
Ive only got bootsplash and xorg installed! Oh, and the nvidia driver.

Im compiling the kde core packages at the mo and it will take quite a few hours but i'll get back with how the new xorg.conf does.

I tried ctrl-alt + , It didnt display anything readable but took my monitor out of standby. Its one to remember!

Thanks for your time
Rik

The xorg file you editted for me works a treat. I got a nvidia splash screen which Id not seen before too!

Im at last in a minimalist kde environment now
Must easier than a black screen with a flashing cursor!

Thankyou very much for your help guys, I wouldnt have done it anytime soon without ya.
