Default GeForce MX 440 on AMD64 big troubles

hi board,

i'm runing an amd64 system with debian unstable and an debian prebuild kernelimage 2.6.15-1-amd64-generic.
for the last 3 nights i tryed to install the nvidia driver to get my twinview setup running, but i was not able to do this. i tried various ways to do this, debian apt version, various version of the nvidia installer.
but most of the time i got the same problem results:
i can build the driver, load it with modprobe, find it with lsmod | grep nvidia, but my x.org server doesn't, and i have no clue why!

i have attached my nvidia-bug-report log and hope somebody can give me a hit, what i should try.
ähm by the way, i used the nvidia version 7664 because with the 8* version the only thing i get are black screens, and when i tryed to remote run the nvidia-bug-report skript it allways hangs at reading /proc/driver/nvidia/version

thanks a lot,
paul

According to your bug report, you are using 1.0-7664, and the X driver cannot be found by X:
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

Please (re)install 1.0-8178, and if this problem persists, generate and post a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

well i allready tryed the 1.0-8178, it installs fine, but when i start the xserver, i get a black screen and have to reboot, and a remote invoken nvidia-bug report skript hangs, when reading proc/driver/nvidia/version
.... atleast this is the last line in the log file

but i would be pleased about any suggestions shipping around this problem, i mean the 1.0-8178 version is my prefered one.

You can generate the bug report after rebooting.

Thanks,

ok, i have done this, i dont load the nvidia module on bootup by now, so i genereted two bug reports, one bevor the modprobe nvidia, and one afterwards.

thanks for the fast reply

What kind of motherboard & BIOS version are you using?
If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters, does that have any impact on this problem?

Thanks,
Lonni

i am using an MSI K8N neo2 Platinum mainboard with an nforce3 ultra chipset and phoenix Award Bios v6.00PG

ähm the acpi=off mode differs only in not hearing the beep when the screen goes black, an yep the nv driver crashes at random.

cheers,

paul

The 'nv' X driver crashes as well as the nvidia X driver?

yes, with the 'acpi=off' in my grub config, the kernel provided X driver 'nv' also crashes, if ti dont use X the system runs stable!
with the 'nvidia' X driver i have got the same problem as i had without the 'acpi=off' command.

X drivers are not part of the kernel. I assume that you meant the X provided 'nv' driver. However, if you're experiencing instability with the nv X driver, then its unlikely that there's an nvidia X driver bug here.

Have you verified that all of your hardware is not faulty?

yes, ok it is the X provided 'nv' driver, but i think thats not the point here! i dont want the nv driver running! i just said it as an error report for the acpi=off option.

i am quit sure that my hardware is not faulty, because bevor i switched to debian i got an ubuntu breezy running with the nvidia driver 1.0-7167. which worked!
i'm not sure if here is an nvidia bug, but the only result what i get when i try to start X with the 1.0-8178 is a black screen.

today i have tried various combinations of nvidia driver versions vs. the 2.6.15-1 debian kernel and an 2.6.14-5 selfbuildkernel. with the same results: an beep and and black screen!

so i have generated a bug report with the 2.6.15-1 and the 1.0-8178 and linked it:
http://mate.dyn-o-saur.com/nvidia-bug-report.log

now i have no clue where to investigate,

please help out,
thanks
paul
