Default tyan K8WE / Nvidia Quadro 3450 / RHEL V4 : Kernal Panic

Hi,

I have been experiencing system lock-ups when doing certain graphical operations.

My system spec's are:

O/S: RHEL V4, 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp

M/B: Tyan K8WE S2995, bios: 1.02

CPU: 2 x opteron 254

Ram: 8 gig registered ECC

Video Cards: NVIDIA quadro FX 3450, driver: 1.0-8178

I am very new to all things Linux

Some questions: Are there any other drivers on the system that I should check out? If so: how to check? where are updates? how to install?

Are there log files etc that may give an idea as to what is causing the problem

cheers
Tony

Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log along with instructions on how this problem can be reproduced.

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi Loni,

I apologise for my lack of knowledge on this, but how do I go about getting the nvidia bug report. I looked in /var/log/ but there wasn't anything there at the moment other than nvidia-installer .log

Hi,

It only ever happens when I am using a specialized casting simulation software that I have on the machine. It will work fine until I turn on a certain graphcal display feature (transparency type view) at which point it will freeze randomly from straight away to several hours.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary in your bug report. Is this commercially available software? I'm going to need a means of reproducing this problem to investigate it further.

Thanks,
Lonni

so, you probably hit a driver bug.

you should write a nice message to linux-bugs@nvidia.com and
describe them your problem (don't forget to add the nvidia-bug-report.log)
... let them know that you're a "company consumer" and wait for their reply...

EDIT: Ok, netllama does it already...

The software is a commercially available but very specialised metal casting simulation package called magmasoft. (<500 installations worldwide)

Is there someway I can catch a log of the event when the crash happens?

!!Update!!

Under "system settings" -> "Display" on the "hardware" tab I changed the Video card from NVIDIA Quadro FX 4400 it was previously NVIDIA Quadro FX 4000.

At this stage I haven't been able to get it to crash with this setting :-) although some of the graphics seem a bit flaky

What is the best selection for my FX 3450 card as there doesn't appear to be a 3450 in the list

cheers

That change wouldn't have any impact on the nvidia driver, as Redhat's tool is unaware of the nvidia driver.
