Default linux support geforce nx 6600 gt ?

anyone mind helping out a noob?

i have very limited experience with linux. i'm trying to learn more but it's very frustrating trying to find any helpful information online. i've searched the forum and haven't found anything helpful, so i started this thread.

i got an error yesterday saying that i don't have 3dsupport for my geforce nx6600gt. otherwise it's working fine (albeit sorta slow). i googled the subject and found this forum and a thread with

The patch attached to this post addresses known problems with the 1.0-8178 NVIDIA Linux x86 and x86-64 graphics driver releases. a patch 1.0-8178 and some instructions on how to install it.

*****
To patch 1.0-8178 and install the updated driver, please follow the instructions for your platform below (the steps needed to update the -pkg* packages not shown are analogous to the examples shown below).

Linux/x86:

# sh /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1
# patch -p0 < /path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-U012206.diff.txt
# ./nvidia-installer -n
*****

obviously i have to type this out SOMEWHERE. i've pulled up a console and tried it there, but nothing happens. no error, no confirmation, nothing.

i'm running the noobiest version of linux i could find (to try to avoid compatability issues so i can LEARN) SUSE linux 10.0

can anyone point me to a resource somewhere online that could explain everything verbatim, rather than starting out with "first extract the file" as i have no idea how to do anything, apparantly. i had luck installing things on an older version of fedora last year, but gave up in frustration over other issues.

also, if anyone has any tips to what i'm doing wrong when trying to install this patch i'd appreciate the help.

have you installed suse package for nvidia cards? I don't think that you have to do any extra things to make suse 10 work with 3D support, only what suse provides for nvidia cards. And this can be done through the graphical user interface, yast or something. (I am not a SuSE user, so please SuSE users help this out.) That's my guessing only though.

And yes, it would be worthy to mention if you have a 64 bit or 32 bit linux.

i see why nothing happened before. i wasn't in a superuser terminal.

this is a 32 bit linux. i forgot that 64bit is common with linux.

and, no, i haven't installed anything other than SUSE itself. it did update itself online.

i'm digging around there and nvidia's website as we speak looking for anything i may have missed before, because i've got an additional issue i'm trying to find a solution for (doesn't involve graphics)

*continues to dig around for info*

Maybe you make the simple mistake of typing the # sign in front of your commands?
The # sign is an indication that you need to type the commands as superuser (root). You will find the # on your screen when you are superuser.

You must NOT type the # yourself, because # as input means "this line is a comment", and nothing will happen!
