Default Which is better dual 6600GT, or single 6800GS

configuring a new pc and already have the SLI motherboard, but not sure that i want to spend th $ for two 6800GS, just yet. So I am thinking of using dual 6600GT instead. If a single 6800GS (PCI-e) will be comparable or even close, then i would prefer to that and purchase a second one later on.

any suggetsions are welcome

yeah, i was think along those lines, that i would have to replace two cards down the road if a went with the 6600GTs..., but it seemed that two 6600GT would be much faster, and so i was in a quandry...

if the performance isn't much different, than i guees i'll do the 6800GS...

and btw, what's wrong with the GT as opposed to the GS?

also, anybody have any stats to support this?

PC World mag benchmarked the 2 6600GTS vs 1 6800GS and on average the 6800gs actually had 1 fps higher. So dont waste your money on SLi'ing those 2 cards. Get a single GS now and wait til u can get anothe.r Plus, the 6800gs has a 256-bit interface while the 6600GT is 128

thanks for the info. i will be going with the single 6800gs. thanks again for helping make that decision.... hard believe, i would have figured two 6600 would have smoked a single 6800 as it is only one class higher, but ihad been looking at some bechhmanrks that caused me to doubt that somewhat, so thanks again, again.

I agree two 6600GT might be faster in some games then one 6800GS ,but you would be better off getting one 6800GS and get another one down the road because two 6800GS's is going to be a lot better then haveing two 6600GT.

(I'm only talking single cards in this post.)

The thing you should remember is the 6600GT only has a 128bit memory controller where the 6800GS has a 256bit memory controller.

The 6800GS also has more pipelines to start with.

It's a better card overall.

At this point, even if you aren't going to go SLI, the 6800GS is a much more capable card.

If you have a 6600GT now, sell it and get the 6800GS.

I have been running two 6800GS cards for some time now. Right after the review I would not recommend purchasing the 6800GS for SLI. Now, I don't know if my recommendation was all that good. The single card performs very well at 1280x1024 but performs significantly better in SLI when playing games such as FEAR and BF2 at that resolution.
Yes, the 7800GTX is a better option, performance-wise, as you can go to higher resolutions with settings maxed. On the money side however, two GS's for $340+ USD is a lot lighter on the pocket book than $400+ for a GTX.

okay, let's take this one step further. Let's say now i'm thinking of getting a 7800GT, rather than two 6800GSs. seems to be i will likely hear "go with the single 7800...".

i am starting to see zero's point.

should i have even bothered with the SLI mobo? honestly, it would cost me less to buy a single 6800GS, or similarly a single 7800GT than to bother with SLI...

hmmmmm....

Yes, especially if you overclock. However, instead of taking steps up just go back to your original position, unless you can make the necessary expenditure now.
Bottom line, if price is the main consideration the 6800 GS is hard to beat since it can give you the performance for playing the newer games.

yeah, well to fess up, i bought my last PC four years ago for morrowind, and now i am buying this one for oblivion. money is an object, but it's more a matter of priorities and i am trying to keep myself from buying dual 7800GTX's

seriously though, it think i may end up springing for one 7800GT...
