Default X2 benchmarking

As a final birthday gift to myself, I went out and bought an X2 4800+. I got it installed (didn't bother to format), installed the AMD CPU driver and the dual core hotfix from MS.

I did some benchmarking and in 3DMark06, my CPU score is really low...less than 1200. Also, when I ran Sandra, it keeps saying that the benchmark is measuring single processor performance only. This is in spite of the fact that the affinity for both programs is for both processors. As such, with the latter program, my scores are (as expected) half of what their charts show for the 4800+.

Any idea what's going on here? Is there some kind of tweak I'm missing that unleashes both these CPUs?

I found this thread while searching around here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...al+core+hotfix

Looks like this guy is/was having the exact same problem. No solution was found, though. I looked, and the XP SP2 CD I have slipstreamed has the hotfix incorporated into it. I deactivated the registry entry, and that boosted the score a bit, though not enough to make it comparable to their baseline. I have a backup copy of XP that doesn't have the hotfix that I'll try tomorrow.

Argh.

OK folks, I've nailed this one down. Of all things, it was my Internet connection that bogged down my scores. If I disable my Linksys wireless card, my Sandra and 3DMark CPU scores shoot right up to where they should be. I'm going to leave things alone for the time being because I'll be switching to a wired cable connection after I move. In that case, this wireless card will be gone from my system and I'll be using my onboard NIC.

/me is a happy camper

Tell me about it. It was a good thing that I left the Internet connection icon in my system tray or else I probably never would have stumbled upon it.

I bet it's bad Linksys drivers that are creating more CPU overhead than they should. Windows update has newer ones, but I don't want to mess with it since I'm going to be done with this connection forever after I move. I'll live with it for the time being, and it's easy enough to disable/enable if I really want.

greetings,

Peacemaker.

p.s.

i got some options in bios - PEG . If i disable PEG Root, and two others pushed to Faster and Short, it gives me about 800-1000 point up in cpu score. ('05)
