Default Still trouble compiling for FC5 after applying all 8178 patches

Hello,

I'm still not able to compile the driver against the Fedora Core 5 Test 3 kernels I've tried with. I have the kernel and kernel-devel packages installed, have installed the xorg-x11-server-sdk package (and its dependencies), and have followed the instructions provided in this thread:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021

(I applied the comprehensive patch)

I have tried compiling against the 2.6.15-1.2032_FC5smp and 2.6.15-1.2041_FC5smp kernels, this is x86 architecture BTW.

I am still getting the following error at the bottom of my nvidia-installer.log file, which is the same as I've been seeing since first trying (before applying any patches):

Code:

ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
ERROR: Installation has failed.
This has happened on two different machines now.

Did I not follow the patch instructions properly, or is this a different problem altogether from what the other patches address? I've not seen this exact error message reported by anyone else so far (error: ‘struct task_struct’ has no member named ‘rlim’).

Also I have a couple of boxen using older/legacy cards that I have to build the 7174 driver for, and I get the same problem trying to build the 7174 driver on FC5 (which probably goes without saying). Whatever the problem is, if another patch is needed to correct it, can we please also visit the 7174 driver and get a patch for that one too? (since the current drivers do not support the "legacy" hardware?).

A Bugzilla was filed at Red Hat against FC5 by somebody else on this issue, but the engineer closed it basically stating "Talk to Nvidia, this is Nvidia's problem, not ours."

Thanks,
24junkie

@24junkie: the above log file suggests that the patch wasn't applied correctly, what where the steps you took to apply it? With respect to 1.0-7174, we hope to release an updated legacy graphics driver in the near future.

I'll run the patch again and capture all output, along with the steps taken beforehand to unpack it etc.

thanks,

Zander,

"silly me"

As I was going through this this evening, I realized what the problem was.

This morning, rather than actually PATCH the installer, I ran it with "--dry-run" first. And then, (DOH!), I forgot to run the patch command again without the --dry-run argument. So it didn't actually patch it.

Sorry. I feel rather silly right about now. Thanks for the help.

The compile completed successfully this time around when I actually PATCHED it.

24junkie

(woo-hoo! Hey at least I know I can install FC5 on our high-falutin' boxen now.)

@24junkie: no problem, it's good to hear that you were able to solve the problem and that you were able to install the driver successfully.

Hi,

I had the same problem. I applied the patch but I still cannot compile the kernel module.

Installation:
2.6.15-1.2054_FC5
xorg-x11-server-sdk-1.0.1-9

I also tried this other patch: NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-1423627.diff.txt

And here is the nvidia-log

I forgot to mention that I also tried with

thanks in advance for any help!

Based on the output you posted, it doesn't look like you've followed all of the instructions here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=66851

The '2054' kernel will not work. 2070 does work, once you follow the above instructions. Please post the full installer log if you have additional questions.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks netllama,

You were right, I made a mistake applying the patch.
I'm very sorry for any inconvenience.

I am still seeing this error in /var/log/nvidia-installer.log when trying to compile:
fc5/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1/usr/src/nv/os-interface
.c:1375: error: ‘struct task_struct’ has no member named ‘rlim’

I am fairly sure I am doing this patch right:
[root@orion fc5]$ sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run --extract-only
Creating directory NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1
Verifying archive integrity... OK
Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86 1.0-8178.............................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..............................
[root@orion fc5]$ cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1/
[root@orion NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1]$ patch -p0 < ../NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-1435131.diff.txt
patching file usr/src/nv/nv.c
[root@orion NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1]$ ./nvidia-installer -n

I am running the 2070 kernel:
[root@orion NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1]$ rpm -qa "kernel*"
kernel-2.6.16-1.2070_FC5
kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2070_FC5

I've attached the full installer log file.

Any thoughts?

@nvDenver: you didn't use the latest cumulative patch; please use NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-U012206.diff.txt (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021)

@zander: I must be going blind. Thanks for spotting that.

Now, the driver compiles, but I get this message when trying to start X:

(I read this off my desktop and retyped on my laptop):
FATAL: Module nvidia_1_0_8178 not found.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Faled to load the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but noe have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

I appreciate how promptly you replied to my last message. Thanks for the help!
