Question System freezes completely - RESET-Button only way out

Hello forum,
three days ago i bought a nvidia 6600 GT (Gainward). As I was told, nVidia Cards should work nice and smooth and the linux drivers are of high quality...my system freezes when playing ET(Pro) with a resolution of 1280x1024@24bit. Although it is playable for a while it suddenly freezes the entire system. Nothing helps besides pressing the Reset button.

Cos I cannot log in with a second computer, I only could attach the relevant syslog part and the nvidia bug report log (file exceeded the 100kb, so i cut the part of usb mass storage)

I read about different solutions to system freezes yet on the forum - so i bought new power supply with 420 W - tried the acpi off and apm off at boot time RenderAccel is commented out in xorg.conf...
dunno what to do.

Besides that, I am using the latest Kernel available from the ubuntu servers and the latest driver 8178

I am using AGP FastWrite and SBA as described in the Ubuntu Forums:
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-nkc
edited to
alias char-major-195* nvidia
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1 NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1

Though I don't think that this might be the problem.

I hope that someone can help me - havent found a solution yet to this on any forum

Thanks alot in advance

manatawady

Does this reproduce with AGP FastWrite and SBA disabled?
Does this reproduce with a more recent kernel?
Have you tried setting different values for NvAGP ?
Does this reproduce if you boot with the acpi=off kernel parameter?
Are you using the latest BIOS for your motherboard?
Have you applied this patch?

Thanks,

I have not tried yet any more recent kernel - 2.6.11 is the latest one in the repositories with applied patches. I will try this one today. Or is the latest stable vanilla kernel (2.6.15) or any other recommended /known to work well?

Using NvAGP 1 creates an error with cache aliasing like the one described in the README:
NVRM: bad caching on address
Only with agpgart this doesnt appear

Yes even with acpi and no apm used at boot

Exclamation Re: System freezes completely - RESET-Button only way out

Back again with more information:

I am definately using the latest BIOS Version which is 5.9 from award BIOS

The most recent Kernel of the ubuntu breezy distro is 2.6.12-10-k7 which I am using atm.

I played ET just few minutes ago and the crash did happen again:
Code:
Mar 17 17:32:02 localhost kernel: [4295023.640000] eth1: no IPv6 routers presentMar 17 17:46:53 localhost -- MARK --
Mar 17 17:48:54 localhost kernel: [4296035.230000] NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0002 180c 0028002f 0010fe8c f000ef6f f000e987
Mar 17 17:48:54 localhost kernel: [4296035.232000] NVRM: Xid: 27,  L1 -> L0
Mar 17 17:48:54 localhost kernel: [4296035.713000] NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0000 180c 00a400a2 00008d6c 00000000 00000000
Mar 17 17:48:54 localhost kernel: [4296035.714000] NVRM: Xid: 27,  L1 -> L0
Mar 17 17:52:02 localhost syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu3: restart.
I have tried playing ET without SBA/FastWrite but the result is that I could only use ca 30 FPS which is not enough to play 20 minutes and wait for a crash - I dont know how to reproduce this in any other way. So called Atlantis Screensaver (GL)did run for quite a while without a crash.

Is there anything else I can do?

PS: I read about VIA chipset mainboards which dont work well with agp 8x. Should I try using different agp speed, though its a nforce2 chipset?

2.6.12-10-k7 is a fairly old kernel. I'm curious whether a more recent kernel.org kernel also reproduces this problem.

Enabling FastWrite is known to introduce instability in many cases.

Thanks,

Hello once again,

I just wanted to let you know, that I still do get the
Code:
Mar 18 23:40:53 ubuntu -- MARK --
Mar 18 23:46:36 ubuntu kernel: [4297462.141000] NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0000 180c 00b400bb 00000000 f000e2c3 00002dc4
Mar 18 23:46:36 ubuntu kernel: [4297462.142000] NVRM: Xid: 27,  L1 -> L0
Mar 18 23:47:47 ubuntu syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu4: restart.
though I do have:

stefan@ubuntu:~$ uname -r
2.6.15-18-386
stefan@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: AGPGART
AGP Rate: 8x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Enabled

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help and replies so far, Lonni

Does this reproduce if you set NvAGP=0 ?

Is there any specific part of ET that triggers the problem?

Hello,
I have this bug also, after an upgrade from an old Mainboard with a socket 478 to a Mainboard with a Socket 578. I have a NVIDIA PCX750 (A PCI Express) but at least I have found a mode to reproduce it:
With KDE I have Started the screensaver and in a little time I have a hard Freezing.
I have found a partial solution for the freezing when I use a open gl scrrensaver:
run
nvidia-settings as a regular user
open gl settings
performance
select
sync to v blank
And NO FREEZING with the opengl screensaver.
My "solution" only works for the "opengl screensever " freezing, not for the "normal screensaver" freezing
PS
I have this errors in my .xsession-errors before I have a hard freezing.

Actually, theres no special part in ET. It happened during many different maps (last freeze was in railgun - had lockups during transmitter, goldrush, wuerzburg radar ... almost in any map) There was no certain action that caused it. Not even in the places of the map, where usually fps go down, like wide areas to display etc.
What I am wondering about is, that its not a certain time till lockup; I could not even say, that it is during the first ten minutes - played almost 45 minutes (three days ago) without lockup.

Though the file .xsession-errors is quite long, theres no error about nvidia or nv nor the XiD thing like in /var/log/syslog

I tried playing ET with "NvAGP" "0"....I tried...
Its kinda impossible playing an online 3D multi-shooter with 10-30 fps...not knowing if theres something special to do to get the freeze.. :-(
So far I would suppose, that NvAGP might work - the way it can but not really satisfying what the nvidia-glx should be for.
I wonder if this is only a problem of the 6600 maybe a 6800 would be just fine...dunno - wish I had one at hand.

Is there a 3d linux test suite something that is trying to use alot of the gpu to test driver stability? I could check the nvagp=0 with that then instead of gettin dizzy with the low fps trying to fight through a game...

cameta,
Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log for review.

manatawady,
If disabling AGP with NvAGP=0 seems to eliminate the problem, then you could be hitting an AGP driver bug, rather than an nvidia X driver bug. You could run spec.org's specviewperf for an OpenGL benchmark. You could also try reducing the AGP rate from 8x to something lower and see if that has any impact.

Thanks,
Lonni

Sorry, but I can't make a bug report because I can't access my machine with a ssh after a hard freezing (only a computer).
But I have SOLVED the hard freezing after change my AOPEN PCX 5750 NVIDIA card by a NVIDIA GEFORCE 6500 from XFX.
There was a problem with the firmware/bios with my old card or an incompatibility with my hardware.
For all the people that has this problem with the hardfreezing go to hardware store and try a new card.

I have exactly the same problem with a 6600. I did have a 6200 and got the problem after about 20 minutes. I sent it back and got the 6600. With the 6600 it is far less frequent, about 2 hours ish.

I'm running Gentoo with a 2.6.15 kernel on an AMD64. I've attached the bug report.

Forgot to mention, with the 6200 I was unable to SSH and had to hard reset. With the 6600 I can SSH althoug the problem is identical(!) and thats how I produced the bug report.
