Unhappy sometimes (short) hungs, sometimes complete freeze

Using kernel 2.6.16 and nvidia driver 8178 and patch
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-U012206.diff.txt I nevertheless get (short) hangs,
but sometimes especially if I use higher resolutions (more than 800x600)
I get a complete freeze,
where only a long press on the power-button helps.
(I try to use the games "legends" and "nexuiz")
Does anybody has an idea?
Thank you

I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce without a PREEMPT enabled kernel, or with the last FC3 official kernel?
1) Which model of SONY laptop are you using?

Thanks,
Lonni

Hallo

Thank you for the fast answere.

Don't know how to quote in this system correct.
Hopefully it is understandable.

0) Does this reproduce without a PREEMPT enabled kernel, or with the last FC3 official kernel?
CK:> I can try without PREEMPT and with last FC3 official kernel. (=2.6.12-1.1381_FC3 (?))
CK:> I have attached my kernel config.

1) Which model of SONY laptop are you using?
CK:> PCG-GRT796SP

With many friendly greetings

Christoph

Hallo

I have now set in the kernel config:
CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y
# CONFIG_PREEMPT is not set

Playing legends seems to be OK,
just in the log file I found:

Mar 25 11:13:51 hidigeigei kernel: NVRM: Xid: 9, Channel 00000002 Instance 00007000 status 0000001d
Mar 25 11:15:08 hidigeigei kernel: NVRM: Xid: 3, C 00000002 SC 00000001 M 0000019c Data beef0202
Mar 25 11:15:08 hidigeigei last message repeated 3 times
Mar 25 11:16:37 hidigeigei kernel: NVRM: Xid: 9, Channel 00000002 Instance 00007000 status 0000001d

But nexuiz in (1280x1024) still hungs after some time.
In the log file I fond:

Mar 25 11:46:18 hidigeigei kernel: NVRM: Xid: 13, 0002 beef3097 00003097 0000019c 00006a00 00000006

Next I will check turning PREEMPT off complete.

With many friendly greetings

Christoph

You might try another card. My brother was getting short pauses and freezes in Windows with an Aopen 6600GT that had overheated pretty high. I swapped out the card for an XFX 6600GT and the pauses and freezes went away -- pretty sure the Aopen card bit the dust.

Thank you for the tip,
but it's a laptop. :-(

Just to report - I'm experiencing the exact same problems (short hangs, some hard hangs, et cetera). I believe I only started experiencing these problems on 2.15 and 2.16 kernel compiles.

I'm recompiling the 2.6.12 (and possibly later 2.14) to see if it stops hanging, as those were the last kernels I used and remember not being affected by this. It seems to occur no matter what OpenGL game I play.

oops. By the way, I'm using an older Ti-4600 from Asus and always using NVIDIA AGP interface.

/edit: added kernel .config files for 2.6.15 and .16 kernels.

Hallo

Hmm, now that you mentioned.
Yes, there was a time when my card worked,
but I thought that it was because of some former nvidia-driver version
(which no more compiles with newer kernels)
But maybe it was the kernel who changed.
--> I will also try 2.6.12.

btw.: Did you also experience that a hung comes faster,
if the screen resolution is higher and if more/better OpenGL "features" are used?

btw.: I always use the kernel AGP interface. (Maybe changing this is also worth a try.)

Best regards
