Any ideas how to fix it?
If you are using x86, then a patched 7174 driver should compile properly (I have tested it). Take a look at the gentoo nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174-r2 ebuild. It applies several patches (many if not all originate from this forum) which allows you to compile the nvidia drivers.

Also, I'd still like SOME kind of patch (it doesn't even have to be a new legacy driver) so that I can compile 7174 on kernel 2.6.16 using the AMD64 arch. :-S

I've had a couple of these. But even though they seem to be some very nasty kernel problems, they didn't cause any damage at all! No reboot, not even the application was shut down.

I've never had it in the X-server process itself though, usually with a 3d game.

Nvidia guys, check the backtrace when you are preparing the updated legacy driver, please.

Thanks,
R.

Angry Re: UNOFFICIAL patch for 7174 and linux2.6.16

I'm patching NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run with follow patches:

nvidia-driver-no-ldconfig.patch (from livna)
nvidia-driver-no-kernel-module-install.patch (from livna)
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-7174-1296092.diff.txt
nv-legacy-linux-2.6.16.patch

Sometimes X process crashes, sometimes machine reboots.

Default Re: UNOFFICIAL patch for 7174 and linux2.6.16

before i start, please forgive the extent of my noob-ness, i have DOS origins but am on my first linux installation.

system = amd k6/2 500Mhz
tnt2 m64
suse 10.0
hope thats enough

so, first of all, and possibly my first mistake, i managed to install the Nvidia 7174 driver by just instralling the kernel source code from yast. after the driver installed i went straight into X with no reboot and as discribed by jarrod1970, it was beautiful, clear crisp and *fast*! i even had a try at quake 3 (failed when ingame screen tried to load) after rebooting X failed to load in the same fassion jarrod1970 discribed.
so i followed the next post about making a file /etc/udev/makedev.d/51-nvida.nodes
this made no difference to me (although i doubt it made no difference, just that i dont know if it did).
the next problem i have is that i cant find the xorg log file to try and post what went wrong!! it said something about failed to load module Nvidia on screen :00

at the moment im trying out different ideas that i find by vim xorg.conf and changing the "nvidia" back to "nv".
please help! im really wanting to rid my machine of XP and i love linux (and the challenge) already and really need this to work. thanks in advance.

http://deepblue.sk/~r0b0/nv-legacy-linux-2.6.16.patch

It works with gcc4.0, I haven't tested with 4.1.

Quick instructions:

# NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1/
# patch -p0 <~/nv-legacy-linux-2.6.16.patch
# ./nvidia-installer
This worked, thanks a lot! Now I can run Google Earth.
(kernel 2.6.16, FC4, GeForce2 GTS)

We all know a patched x86 driver works but I'm still wondering when we will get a patched driver to work on Athlon 64 (x86 64-bit).

hi,

is there a patch fpr the 2.6.17 kernel?
the 2.6.16 patch apllies cleanly and the module builds, but when i tray to load the modules, it only says:

nvidia: Unknown symbol pm_unregister

my kernel has:
CONFIG_PM=y
CONFIG_PM_LEGACY=y

Thanks nvidia for _finally_ releasing a new legacy driver to fix all the problems we have been having. :-)
