When you install the nvidia packet nvidia-bug-report.sh should also be installed on your system. Type nvidia-bug-report.sh at the prompt, you may need to be root(or what ever it is on Solaris). nvidia-bug-report.log will be in your home directory or were ever you ran it from.

Xorg is no longer starting for me, either using my (previously working) xorg.conf file, or the same file with UseEdidFreqs set to false.
The Xorg.0.log file lists an error about the keyboard, which I think is bogus: (II) LoadModule: "keyboard" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module keyboard (II) UnloadModule: "keyboard" (EE) Failed to load module "keyboard" (module does not exist, 0) Then it prints the usual load of stuff, and then finally: (II) Setting vga for screen 0. (==) NVIDIA(0): Depth 8, (==) framebuffer bpp 8 (==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is PseudoColor (==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0) (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "NoLogo" (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "UseEdidFreqs" "False" (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure (EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and (EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly. (EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details. (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Does anyone have ideas? Thanks, Chris |

Is this Solaris or Solaris Express (and if so, which build)?
What kind of videocard are you using? Please generate and post a bug report. Thanks, Lonni |

I just backed out a kernel patch (118844-27) and this seems to restore Xorg somewhat - it now starts up although only in 8bpp mode. Better than not starting up at all... Quote:
Thanks! Chris |

What kind of Dell system is this?
If you specify a default depth in your xorg.conf, does that have any impact? Thanks, Lonni |

In the mean time, it seems that this problem was noticed last year, and there's a workaround: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message/31955 So I've put the kernel patch back, and now Xorg starts again with the nvidia driver. However it still only gives me 8bpp even with DefaultDepth set to 24. Thanks again, Chris Last edited by cjr; 01-13-06 at 06:56 AM. |

The trick is to remove the nvidia drivers (use pkgrm), then remove the nvidia lines from /etc/path_to_inst and /etc/driver_aliases, then "reboot -- -r", and then to reinstall the nvidia drivers. Chris Last edited by cjr; 01-16-06 at 08:28 AM. |

I wound up in the same situation with the Kernal drivers not being able to be loaded. I had installed the latest version of the Nvidia drivers and then afterwards installed the drivers from Sun's system disc v 1.2 for the Sun Ultra 20. It came up with the Kernal driver load problem. I reinstalled the Nvidia drivers and it came up with a version mismatch between the X server and client files. Reinstalling the Nvidia drivers dropped it back into the kernal driver load problem and several attempts to pkgrm and reinstall failed dismally. Long story short, I followed the steps above and it's now working like a charm!

I also have the same "Depth 8bpp" problem with 8178 driver, and in my case, un-installing-and-then-re-installing the driver didn't solve the situation. (I did re-installation twice.)
My machine is JWS w1100z, and the card is Quadro280, OS is 10 1/06 and patches applied. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, MM |

I could recover 24bpp somehow. Yet I'm not sure what had been the real problem.
What I did are... - with BIOS setting menu, disabled unusing I/O devises as many as possible - redone the 'uninstall-and-then-reinstall' one more time - run nvidia-xconfig again. MM w/ ![]() |
