I wrote an howto on installing Linux on VAIO VGN-FE11S wich has a 7400 go onboard. I also wrote an xorg.conf file wich works with nvidia 8178 (patched with forum patches) and 7400 go.

here is the link : www.iwebyoumind.com

go to " articolo consigliato " , Linux on VAIO VGN-FE11S and follow link to download my xorg.conf

I attached here a zipped version of xorg.conf

Man, you rule!

Have tried many modelines before without success, but this one worked at once!

Now I can get back to Linux just before they release the next driver

Thx.

Default Re: Nvidia Go 7400 Works On Linux

no luck on my Vaio SZ160, it won't even load the nvidia driver.
With Fedora Core 5, running 2.6.16.1 and Xorg 7.0:
I did install the nvidia driver with the last set of patch.
[avenardj@aragorn ~]$ /sbin/lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 4093968 0
[
the fatal error with X11 is there I believe:
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

I've attached the full log below.
Any ideas?
Thanks

From your Xorg.log it seems that you haven't installed nvidia 8178 drivers on your system. If you downloaded nvidia PROPRIETARY drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html and patched them with nvnews forum patches (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021), you should try this howto (for Fedora : http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=66851 ).

try to give this command:

(from root)

# modinfo nvidia

if it gives you a "module not found error" you probably don't have nvidia proprietary driver on your installation

Hi.

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.kolicense: NVIDIA
alias: char-major-195-*
vermagic: 2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp SMP 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-4.1
depends:
alias: pci:v000010DEd*sv*sd*bc03sc00i00*
parm: NVreg_VbiosFromROM:int
[snip]

As I mentioned in my previous email, the nvidia kernel module has been installed and is being loaded automatically. Of course I have installed the 8178 drivers after I applied the patch.

I did:
[root@aragorn nvidia]# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run --extract-only
Creating directory NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1
Verifying archive integrity... OK
Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86 1.0-8178..........

#cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1
# patch -p0 < ../NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-U012206.diff.txt
patching file usr/src/nv/Makefile.kbuild
patching file usr/src/nv/conftest.sh
patching file usr/src/nv/nv-linux.h
patching file usr/src/nv/nv-vm.c
patching file usr/src/nv/nv.c

./nvidia-installer -n

I then answered the appropriate question, and it finishes with Install Succesful.
#ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5138376 Mar 31 02:34 /lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

# find /usr/X11R6/lib -iname "*nvidia*"
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1.0.8178
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.a

From what I can tell, everything is where it should be, or at least that's what the installer lead me to believe.

Hi, I had the same troubles.
As far as I understood, the path for the X11-libs has moved. You should install the xorg-x11-server-sdk package via yum, which will correct the path.
