Default X freeze with 8178 sometimes

Hello,

I get random screen freezes when starting X with startx or Xfce startxfce. When the problem occurs instead of the nvidia logo I get the following screen
http://www.zannetis.com/forum/1a.JPG (upper half of the screen is blinking, bottom half is black).
Sorry about the quality had to use camera since cannot capture fb or from X.

After that I get this screen
http://www.zannetis.com/forum/2.JPG
I need to keep on hitting ctrl-alt-backspace to force the X server to quit. Else it will freeze. The next screen displayed is
http://www.zannetis.com/forum/3.JPG

Finally I'm able to return to cosole with the x server killed.

I did not generate a bug report using the nvidia bug report tool, since it does not include the lines from Xorg.0.log that get wriiten when the problem occurs. Please see attached Xorg.0.log. The last 4 lines (WW) get written only when the problem occurs.
Xorg.0.log (also found at http://www.zannetis.com/forum/xorg.conf.txt)

I am also inlcluding the lines from /var/log/messages when the problem occurs

messages.txt (also found at http://www.zannetis.com/forum/messages.txt)

gentoo, 2.6.15-gentoo-r7 kernel, 8178 drivers. The graphics is nvidia 6150. I'm not sure if I should be posting in the 6150 thread, but seeing that thread is very long and this might be a general problem I decided to start a new post.

I have tried several options (NvAGP 0,1, RenderAccell). If any more info is needed please let me know.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Just an addtion. I also tried kernel 2.6.15-r4 and the same problem. Also tried with NvAGP "1" and "0", and RenderAccel "Off". I don't remebmer this problem happening before, so I suppose it must be an upgrade.

Is any one experiencing this with similar behaviour?

Thanks.

I currently have the same problem. I'm using Gentoo 2006.0 with kernel 2.6.15-gentoo-r5 and 8178 drivers on an Asus A8N-VM CSM. I'm still booting with acpi=off and noapic (DSDT not patched).

I've tried calling only "X" at the command line (should come up with a grey screen and a mouse pointer) but the same effect as described above occurs. It also seems to happen exactly every other time I try to run X.

Any ideas?

Do you get the same screens as the ones I posted above? Not sure if I should try with older driver.

The second screen in my case is completely white, other than that they are exactly the same. I'm gonna try and play with it a little more tonight, but I have no real ideas yet...

I have tried some other BIOS and AGP related settings since I read that there are certain BIOS settings that affect this (nvidia has a list). No luck yet.

Lonni can you please have a look.

Thanks.

Hi,

Lonni thanks for the reply. However please note that I cannot generate a bug report. I did but it does not include the lines and error messages from Xorg.0.log and dmesg that actually reflect the problem. That is why have included these two files along with screens. I tried running nvidia bug report tool from different terminal but unfortunately did not contain errors, probably because X freezes.

If there is anything else needed please let me know.

Thanks and best regards.

You can generate the bug report after rebooting but before (re)starting X. Without a bug report, I have no means of investigating this further.

Thanks,
Lonni

In your bug report, you seem to have some IRQ management issues:

irq 11: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

Which motherboard are you using, and which BIOS version?
Does this problem persist if you use a kernel.org 2.6.16.1 kernel?
Does this problem persist if you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters?

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi Lonni,

Thanksfor quick reply.
Using MSI K8NGM2-FID board, BIOS 3.20.
I have tried the kernel options but have not tried 2.6.16 kernel, just the gentoo kernels 2.6.15-r7. I have tried previous kernels though. I am also pasting the output of cat /proc/interrupts, don't know if it's useful. Intterrup 11 is used by nvidia. I will try and see if I can solve the instterrupt problem in the bios. I think this didn't always happen (i think 6150 was using interrupt 10 before).
