Default black and white screen for TV-out

Hi,

Since I updated to the new nvidia driver 8178 my TV-out only shows in black and white. Unfortunately donwgrading the driver did not give me my colors back. I checked the TVSaturation and other values with the nvidia-settings utility but they seems fine (alhough I don't really know what all the options mean).

I have two graphical cards:
nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000 AGP 8x connected to my CRT screen
nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] connected to my TV

The CRT-screen is fine with colors but the TV is in black and white.

Anybody?

Andrej

Unfortunatetely no responses yet but I have some additional info.

My graphics cards are both fine; when I swap them in xorg.conf the CRT keeps giving me colors but the television still in black and white.

I also tried another television but no luck; svideo keeps pulling me back to the 1950ies...

Please help, my wife is pressuring me!

Andrej,
You stated that since upgrading to 1.0-8178 you lost color, but then downgrading didn't help either? So 1.0-7676 used to work fine, but no longer does? If so, has anything else changed in your environment (hardware or software)?

Also the bug report you provided is against 1.0-8174. Can you confirm that this problem is also present with 1.0-8178?

The only other suggestions that I can offer are:
0) Have you tried upgrading your kernel to something more recent?
1) The X configuration in your bug report only references a CRT, not a TV. I'd like to see a bug report that actually includes the configuration with the TV that isn't producing color.
2) What kind of motherboard & BIOS version are you using?

Thanks,
Lonni

First of all, thanks for your reply.

0) Have you tried upgrading your kernel to something more recent?

My original configuration worked for kernel 2.6.8.1 for over one year without any problem with several nvidia drivers such as 7676 and 8174. Then I updated my kernel to 2.6.12 with nvidia 8178 and my TVOut turned into black & white. I did not change the xorg configuration files. Dowgrading my kernel and nvidia driver to my original, working configuration unfortunately did not give me back my colors.

Unfortunately I do not have the luxary to upgrade my kernel to a more recent versions because of other software dependencies.

1) The X configuration in your bug report only references a CRT, not a TV. I'd like to see a bug report that actually includes the configuration with the TV that isn't producing color.

I checked the nvidia-bug-report.log and there is the TV configiuration too. You can find it on line 1430. Anyway, I will attach my xorg.conf as an attachment.

2) What kind of motherboard & BIOS version are you using?

I have a Asus P5P800S motherbord with BIOS version 0502. I did not have any problems with this version before. I am aware that there is a more recent BIOS version available now.

If you need additional info, please tell me.
For now, thanks for your time!

Greets,

Andrej

You are right, your X configuration does include the TV, however its not being used, per your X log. I'd like to see a bug report which shows the TV being used.

I'd suggest updating the BIOS, and updating the kernel. I understand that you have software dependencies on the current kernel, so just booting into a new one to verify whether it has any impact would be a useful datapoint.

Thanks,
Lonni

O yeah, forgot to mention that I start two X servers with a seprate ServerLayout. Attached you will find the output from /var/log for both X servers. The second one is connected to my TVout.

Thanks!

Does this reproduce with a single X server and two X screeens, or TwinView?

I will try updating my kernel and using TwinView this tomorrow.

Though, do the following errorrs, generated during startup of X server, say anything to you?

(EE) Failed to load module "speedo" (module does not exist, 0)

.....

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
(EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

.....

(EE) NVIDIA(0): vm86() syscall generated signal 4.

Andrej

The failure to load glx looks like its happening because glx wasn't requested in the X configuration. I'd really like to see a bug report generated when all of this was happening to get a better idea of what was going on.

The part of the log that starts here:
vm86() syscall generated signal 4
is actually coming from X's int10 module. Its possible that this is an int10 (and therefore X) bug. If you're feeling adventerous, you could try upgrading your version of Xorg to see if it has any impact on this problem (or the black & white problem).

Thanks,
Lonni

I configured my xorg.conf to only use my TVout and produced a nvidia-bug-report. I guess this will be okay instead of TwinView (otherwise please tell me).

Also, I checled for a newer BIOS version from ASUS but they only have a beta-version newer then the one currently installed on my machine. I rather do not install the beta-version...

I hope you have enough info now.

Thanks!

I'm not seeing anything that is obviously wrong in the latest bug report. I've setup an MX4000 that I have here with your X configuration, but I'm getting color.

If you take a screenshot of the TV, does the screen shot capture black & white as well, or is it in color?

Thanks,
Lonni

The screenshot is in color. What do you conclude from that?
