Lonni,

Thank you for your continued assistance.

The command:
pkg-config --variable=moduledir xorg-server
... produced no output whatsoever.

Does this shed any light?

In case it helps or not, because hmedney mentioned it, I also tried:
sudo modprobe nvidia
... and this also returned no output, error or otherwise.

Yes, the fact that the pkgconfig command produced no output is the reason why the driver isn't getting installed properly. That command should return the location of the xorg modules directory. Either Ubuntu has a bug such that its not shipping a pkg-config file for xorg, or you're missing the package that includes the pkg-config file for xorg. I'm more inclined to believe its the latter, since I'm not seeing a large number of Ubuntu users reporting this problem. I'm afraid I don't know which package Ubuntu uses that ships the pkg-config file for xorg, so you'll need to consult with an Ubuntu support group/forum for that information. Once you get that sorted out, reinstall the nvidia driver, and this problem should be resolved.

However, you should have been able to workaround this problem by creating the symlinks that were referenced here:

Thanks,
Lonni

Default Solved

Thanks to this post:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...75&postcount=7

The command:
Code:
pkg-config --variable=moduledir xorg-server
returned nothing for me as well. The solution was to specify the module path to the installer:

Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8756-pkg2.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules
The other suggestion in the post worked which was to install the xorg development libraries.

hmedney,

Thank you for weighing in with your information. The command:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules
... worked for me. (there was a slight difference in file names)

I now have essential support for my Galaxy GeForce 7600 video card.

I can't get both monitors working, though. I looked at the xorg.conf file referenced at:
http://www.zwhlug.nl/content/nvidia_...tu_breezy_5_10
... but I can not meld its dual screen configuration into my xorg.conf file successfully.

Is there a beginner-accessible guide for setting up a dual monitor xorg.conf file?

Disregard my last posting.

Simply by adding:
Option "TwinView"
Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024,1280x1024"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "LeftOf"

...into my xorg.conf, and I have both monitors working.

Thank you lonni and hmedney for your quick and helpful assistance.

I can now happily report that this installation is completey successful.
