Default 8756: perf. loss, missing Makefile

I was patching my port to build 8756 when I noticed there's no more Makefile,
tried the installer --> segfault
tried again --> segfault ...hrmm!

Grabbed the Makefile from the previous driver, edited with the new revision #s,
built cleanly and installed as expected ...\o/

Fired Quake4, ...noticeably slower ...hrmm!
Benched UT4 --> 13% slower :/

On the bright side, I'm sure they're a lot more solid with Composite, my desktop no longer tried to come through my game's hud.

I checked the changelog again, the docs to make sure that new alpha option wasn't on by default, the logs ...no clue, everything looks fine.

This performance loss is unacceptable for my 5900XT,
I reverted to 8178 which is not a problem in itself since I was pretty satisfied with them,
except that I anticipate further problems trying to run up to date kernels in the not so distant future!

Should I already feel in a dead end with a coupla years old 5xxx series card or are other series affected also? ...or did I miss something?

The Makefile was removed because it was no longer a supported (or maintained) means of installing the driver. Can you clarify why you wish to use the Makefile to install the driver instead of the documented, supported methods?

As for the performance issues, please provide the following information:
0) An nvidia-bug-report.log
1) How you are measuring/benchmarking performance
2) Your benchmark/performance measurements from 1.0-8756 and 1.0-8178

Thanks,
Lonni

That's the way CRUX's port deals with your driver, I'm not a developper but I assume that it allows the flexibility and consistency of the native pkg manager.

Same here. I've noticed a fps decrase in quake4 in the same level/place of the level from ~60fps with the 8178 drivers to ~50fps with the 8756 drivers.

May I ask what card you have?

Knoppmyth (the most popular distribution for PVRs) uses the Makefile in its installer scripts as well.

There should be a sticky about how it's impossible for nvidia to make sure every obscure, distribution specific, package management system work.

WHY aren't you just using the installer until your packagers catch up. Better yet, become part of the maintainer teams yourselves and fix it.

d*.*b,
If you're only seeing the performance loss while compositing is in use, then this is expected behavior. Rather than drawing the game directly onto the screen, it now draws them offscreen. The composite manager then composites that offscreen copy into the main screen. This results in some performance loss from the extra copy, but that's how compositing is supposed to work.

As for the Makefile issue, the Makefile was unsupported for quite a while (note that it wasn't mentioned in any of the official documentation), and was finally removed altogether in 1.0-8756. I'd suggest contacting your distribution to notify them of this change. They can certainly post here, or email linux-bugs@nvidia.com if they have specific questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Lonni
