I hope it will work for me also, strange nobody mentioned in release notes..

There are some posts in this forum saying that since this driver release mode names have to be unique. Maybe metamode 800x600, 800x600 gets mistaken with normal 800x600 mode? Or they have to have different names, like 800x600_100, 800x600_50? Could someone try this? I can't do it now as something has screwed up with my TV and it will take some time to fix.

How did you get 800x600 res to work on the tv-out? I am using NTSC-M, and outputing via SVideo to the TV and VGA to the CRT. What TVStandard did you use to get 800x600? When I look at verbose logging, it says it is not an option any longer?!?

Thumbs down Re: TV-out ceased to work in 8756 release

I can confirm this. Starting with 8756 tv-out is no longer working for me. This is what the relevant section of the logs say:
Quote:
(**) NVIDIA(0): TwinView enabled
(--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce FX 5600 at PCI:1:0:0:
(--) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA TV Encoder (TV-0)

(--) NVIDIA(0): TV encoder: NVIDIA

(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: DFP-0
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Invalid display device in Mode Description "TV-0:800x600"
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode description "TV-0:800x600"; unable to map to
(WW) NVIDIA(0): display device
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to find all display devices requested in TwinView

(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "DFP-0:1280x1024,TV-0:800x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1280 x 1024
The relevant section of my xorg.conf file:
Code:
  Option "TwinView"
# Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50"
# Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60"
  Option "HorizSync" "TV-0: 30-50"
  Option "VertRefresh" "TV-0: 60"
  Option "TwinViewOrientation" "DFP-0 LeftOf TV-0"
  Option "TVOutFormat" "COMPOSITE"
  Option "TVOverScan" "0.9"
  Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0, TV-0"
# Option "RandRRotation"
  Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B"
  Option "MetaModes" "DFP-0: 1280x1024, TV-0: 800x600" #; DFP-0: 1280x1024, TV-0: NULL"
This has always worked with previous versions. Without the video-cable plugged in I had a normal 1280x1024 desktop, with the cable (after restarting the x-server, still annoying, but ok) I had an extended desktop with the right part of 800x600 on the tv. Based on the suggestions here the only way to get tv-out to work is to use:
Code:
  Option "UseDisplayDevice" "TV-0"
and remove the ConnectedMonitor string. This however ONLY gives me a picture on the tv, and nothing on my monitor. I couldn't find any other mix of settings with which I could get a picture on both screens. And I am certainly NOT going to edit my xorg.conf EVERY time just to switch between my TFT and TV output to watch a movie.

I hope this gets fixed really soon because as it is now, the new driver is unusable for me.

Additionally while playing with the settings I managed to get the 'garbled screen' again, but only only on the text-console, but also on the X-terminal. It wouldn't go away until I rebooted the machine.

Darkvater, I've looked into this, and the only way that I could reproduce this problem was if I was requesting a mode for the TV which wasn't supported.

Are you certain that your TV can do 800x600? Have you tried other modes for the TV, such as 640x480 or 1024x768?

Also, have you tried commenting out the "TVOutFormat" option?

Thanks,
Lonni

Interesting, very interesting. 800x600 doesn't want to work no matter what I do. However trying 640x480 or 1024x768 or 720x576 ALL work. So I think my problem is kinda solved. I am still puzzled though why 800x600 as a tv-out resolution worked both with previous Nvidia driver versions and on Windows.

I've also tried commenting out the 'TVOutFormat' option, but that resulted in washed-out colours, so I put back the composite value.

I can use 720x576 as a tv-out resolution now I suppose.

Edit: I take back the all-good part. TV-out does indeed work, only I can't use mplayer properly anymore. In previous driver versions dragging the player to the tv-screen and going fullscreen there, fullscreened the movie to that resolution (in my case 800x600). With the new driver version, it seems to fullscreen to the 1280x1024 of the primary screen and I only see the top-left part of the picture . Damn.

Edit2: I also see one more difference between the last-version and 8756 that might be the 'cause' or a 'result' of the driver-changes. In 8178 and before when you looked at the mini-desktops in the taskbar you could see only a part of the image was was used, the right part (800x600) was blank. I'll try a picture of this to make clear. With 8756 the primary screen shows no signs of a Twinview other than a stretched out background picture. Also the login screen looks normal. In the past with Twinview I sort of got the background 4 times. Again, picture coming up.

1. Twinview-tft. This is how the login screen looked with 8178. With 8756 it looks like it is supposed to look.
2. Twinview-difference is what the desktop-images show on the taskbar. Note the wider space around 'Desktop 1'

Same problem here - 800x600 worked fine in 8178 drivers - now I can only get 640x480 to work, but when login manager starts up my monitor goes blank and I get freq out of range error. When I boot to console and run startx it works ok strangely enough.

The only way I can fix this is downgrading to 8178 drivers.

Ditto. After much tinkering after my upgrade, I found that my TV-out (cloned, twinview) on my GeForce 6150 worked at 1024x768, but not at 800x600 as I had used with the 8178 drivers.

1024x768 indeed works, however my metamodes are being ignored:

Option "MetaModes" "1280x960,1024x768;1024x768,1024x768"

(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "MetaModes" "1280x960,1024x768"

OK I fixed the metamodes - seems exiting to login screen doesn't exit X properly, so when I ctrl-alt-backspaced it read xorg.conf properly.

Now the remaining problem: when I try to change resolution using either gnome or kde monitor properties, my refresh rate at max is 50 (normal) but rate for 1024 is 51 (should be at least 75)

I've tried adding new modelines but it hasn't cured it.
