Default Nvidia fails after reboot

I'm using Ubuntu Dapper. I followed the install instructions listed in the sticky and on the drivers page. I installed the drivers and ran nvidia-xconfig. For some reason, nvidia-xconfig is writing a new xorg.conf file, but puts it in my home directory instead of /etc/X11/. I copied it to /etc/X11 and started the X server. When X comes up, I get an NVIDIA logo page and things seem to be working. I ran glxgears to check OpenGL and this works fine. Oddly, the laptop decides to use the external monitor instead of the main one. When I restart the computer, the x server will not start. I get the following text. I'm not even sure where to start debugging this problem or how to search for topics covering it.

@bestokes: do you have any Ubuntu NVIDIA driver and/or restricted-modules packages installed?

I removed the nvidia-glx package using the Synaptic Package Manager. I also made sure that I had 'make' and 'gcc'. I checked that the linux-headers matched the kernel. I made sure I had pkg-config and xserver-xarg-dev, and I uninstalled the linux-restricted-modules. I then closed the x server and ran
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run".

I just tried again without the external monitor plugged in and I was completely unable to get the nvidia x server running. This time I made a the bug log file.

What does `modinfo nvidia` report on your system?

I had the same problem for the last 2 days. The fix: remove all older kernel versions, then reinstall nvidia drivers.

Removing the kernel fixed the problem. Thank you very much. The only problem now is that when I kill the X server using ctrl+alt+backspace the computer hangs for some considerable time. But at least it's working.
