Default Problems with 1.0.8178-r3 AND 1.0.8756 under x86_64 and MSI GForce FX5900XT

Hi all,

I am using gentoo on x86_64. While using the nvidia-kernel ebuild:
=media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r3 AND =media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8756

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
the fan speed of the MSI Gforce FX5900XT goes to maximum speed when xorg starts up. Normaly the fan speed should be controlled by the graphic cards bios - the drivers above seem to disable this. Because of the terrible noise of the fan, both versions of nvidia kernel and
the corresponding nvidia-glx are unusable.
END PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

ADDITIONAL INFO:
The nvclock utility does not have any effect on the fan speed anymore although with lower versions it worked well.
Furthermore the nvidia-settings utility (with coolbits enabled) results in a segfault when it is launched.
Just to mentiona that these tools are unable to fix the problem described above.

This problems seems to be hardware specific (related to my graphic card) due to the fact that nobody could confirm this issue in the gentoo forums so far.

Does anybody can help?

regards
Erdie

You should really try and use the proper channels for your issues. So, nvclock issues should be directed to the nvclock maintainer, problems with nvidia-settings segfaulting should be directed to the Gentoo forums (no it's not a bug with nvidia-settings it works for everybody else).

Forget nvclock and forget nvidia-settings ...

---> the issue is that my fan speed goes to maximum while loading the nvidia modules listed above. The hardware fancontrol will be disabled after loading the nvidia binary module.

I just want to add a comment that both tool are not able to fix the problem.

The Gentoo devleopers say, that they arenīt able to fix problem with binary nvidia modules and you say, I should ask the gentoo forum? Now the circle is closing

If you actually read my post it says that if you have problems with nvidia-settings segfaulting then ask about that specific problem on the Gentoo forums, since it's obviously not a fault with nvidia-settings in general.

As for the fan problem, that could very well be a problem with the new driver, I'm not arguing that.

PS: Why are you using the 8178 kernel module with the 8756 driver? Also, you should generate a bugreport and post it here.

@Erdie: the source code for `nvidia-settings` is available from ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-settings; if possible, it'd be great if you could obtain a call trace when the application crashes, i.e. by running `nvidia-settings` from within `gdb` and issuing the bt command after the segmentation fault has been caught by the debugger.

With respect to the fan speed, problems like yours are typically caused by broken VBIOS's; have you checked if MSI has made an updated VBIOS for your card available for download?

@arokh: I did not use a mismatch of drivers, I just want to say that it happened on driver version 8178 and 8756. @zander: The vbios is a good hint, I will look for updates there at first, thanks !
If this will not help I will create a backtrace ...
