Lightbulb geforce 6600 + motherboard agp4x

i just bought a 6600 pci express, but my motherboard is only an agp 4x.

with nv driver, all was working perfectly .... but
the first time i used nvidia drivers with it, i got nothing on the screen, and:
Xid errors in dmesg output,
WAIT errors in Xorg.0.log

i searched and tried it all:
-flash my card
-disable agp
-well tune my motherboard bios
-enable agp only in 2x
-pray god
-sacrify some sheeps

finally, i found the solution, i just have to load kernel module with nv_disable_pat option, and everything is cool

just one thing, my games and composite manager are working quite well, but glxgears is really slow and doesn't output anything to the console. strange, no ?

i hope it will help someone in my case.

@funman: I'm curious as to why you're seeing problems with the drivers's builtin PAT support enabled; please generate and attach nvidia-bug-report.log files with and without the nv_disable_pat kernel module option.

Post Re: geforce 6600 + motherboard agp4x

here it is:
a gnome session started with pat disabled

and a gnome session started, then killed, then i ran nvidia-bug-report.sh
i was unable to run it while x running, i put a nvidia-bug-report.sh in my gnome-session autostart, i can hear the login sound, but when i kill my server i notice that nvidia-bug-report.sh have not been ran.

that's why xset & nvidia-settings couldn't run.

while trying to make a log, i notice one more thing:
i boot my computer, start an x session with pat disabled: all is ok
i enable pat, to make (unsuccessfully) a log, then kill my server: i get access to my console.
then i disable pat again, and the xserver doesn't work, just as if pat was enabled: hu?

pat_disabled_nvidia-bug-report.log is the log created when nv_disable_pat=1
x_dead_pat_enabled_nvidia-bug-report.log is the log created when nv_disable_pat=1 and X session has terminated (ran from console)

Well tracked down, this solution worked well for me - I had been despairing of getting the nvidia driver to work for some time, with the symptoms described above.

My motherboard/graphics card combination is:
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Socket A Motherboard (nforce 2)
Inno 3D GeForce 6600 AGP with BIOS 5.43.02.61.00

With the module option included in /etc/modprobe.conf, the symptoms don't reappear
regardless of the setting of NvAGP or the AGP aperture size.

the problem appears to be geforce 6600 specific, IF it's a pci express card used on a agp only motherboard AND used with linux AND with nvidia driver (no problems with nv), will nvidia try to fix this bug, even if it's an (old) card ?

funman,

I have exactly the same problem, with this Twintech card. I tried the nv_disable_pat=1 trick, and it seems to work good, X starts, no pb... but a little "cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status" tells me that agp is still disabled... and indeed, performances are quite poor for a 6600.
Do you also get the AGP disabled ?
bye

fun@zod:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
fun@zod:~$

since it is a pci-express card, i think it does not use agp, or use it in a strange way

i got really fast rendering
