Default Go 420 under Ubuntu Dapper - install problems

I tried to install the nvidia-drivers under Ubuntu Dapper Drake flight 6 and failed miserably. I tried the walkthrough from http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper
The card is a Geforce Go 420 on a Samsung X10 XTC 1300

I tried method 1 and method 2 which seemed to install fine - but ultimately yielded a garbled mess of a screen. The X server did not crash however, I was still able to login (by blind typing - the proper sounds came up), Alt-Ctrl-1 enabled me to revert Gnome to working status as well.
With "garbled mess" I'm talking about a mostly brown screen with some stripes - it seems as if the graphics card uses the wrong refresh/sync rates for my screen.

I then tried to use the driver version 8178 - which yielded the following X-Errors:
Code:
NVIDIA(0): No modes remaining for display DFP-0
NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting***
NVIDIA(0): Failed to unmap registers
NVIDIA(0): Failed to unmap registers
NVIDIA(0): Failed to free registers
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
From what I'm seeing from the detailed error log is that it's trying to find a display mode that usable with my monitor but finds none for some reason (either it says "vrefresh out of range" or "hsync out of range" or "bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan").

The additional Options like IgnoreEDIDs do nothing - the error log tells me that it indeed ignored the EDID but the error stays the same.

The XGL Live CD from Kororaa runs just fine. So, has anyone run into this and managed to solve it?

Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,

And here it is.

This is the one for the older driver versions. Shall I also create one for the newest version?

Just so you know, Dapper has the latest nvidia driver already in the repository.

I already tried that one...

Method one of the walkthrough to which the link of my first post leads makes explicit use of the repository - yielding a garbled screen.

The older versions cannot find any proper refresh rates - and the newest one does seem to find them, just not the correct one

1.0-8174 is no longer supported. It looks like the problem here is that you're getting a 0Mhz pixelclock, which results in all modes getting rejected. If this problem reproduces with 1.0-8756, please generate and post an updated bug report.

Additionally, I'd suggest removing IgnoreEDID from your X configuration, and checking the driver README for the ModeValidation option for potential workarounds.

Thanks,
Lonni

Okay, this is the try with the newest driver version which yields a garbled screen output.

So, could anyone point me to the proper instructions which might tell X that 1024x768 is indeed available?

The advice in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=68136 should be enough to get you going.

Just run "gtf 1024 768 60" from a terminal to get a modeline.

It's true that laptops suffer the most with these drivers, and I hear it's the same over at Ati.

From your nvidia-bug-report.log:
Code:
/proc/driver/nvidia/registry
VideoMemoryTypeOverride: 1
EnableVia4x: 0
EnableALiAGP: 0
NvAGP: 3
ReqAGPRate: 15
EnableAGPSBA: 0
EnableAGPFW: 0
SoftEDIDs: 1
Mobile: 4294967295
...
Seeing this together with GeForce4 420 Go, I just have to remind you that I have to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/options to even get to the xdm greeting screen:
Code:
options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1 NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0
I have a different notebook than you as you can see in my sig, but it might be worth a shot...

Yah, I did add those lines - they didn't change anything, however. Will try the link from Dr. Tyrell when I'm sober again, though

Do you have a TV attached? According to your bug report you have a TV attached. If that's not the case, can you try adding the "IgnoreDisplayDevice" option for the TV, and if that fails, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and post a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni
