I got a little question not related to the problem of the thread's author, but it's about performance as well:
In what ways can preemption or the kernel framebuffer affect 3D performance of a graphics card? As far as I know, PREEMPT only makes the kernel able to interrupt it's work which is good for userspace apps and the framebuffer is only working on the virtual consoles.
I have enabled PREEMPT and I am using the VESA framebuffer as well, but I think my system is running somewhat fast and reliable (3D as well, i.e. UT2k4 has usually more than 100 FPS, sometimes above 200 at 1024x768 AA and AF disabled, with a P4 2.0 GHz and a GeForce4 Ti4600)

vesafb has no relationship to running X. You do not need vesafb to run X.

You need to build the 2.6.16.5 kernel.org kernel without preemption.

Is the performance problem only present with WoW?

PREEMPT could be causing the performance problems discussed in this thread.

If you say one should disable PREEMPT, I guess it's related to the problem
I wanted to know what PREEMPT does that may make performance bad - I don't want to know details, but it would be nice if you could give me a rough explaination...I 'm always interested in such things, sorry

I don't know whether PREEMPT is impacting performance, however it has caused problems for some people. Removing it from the picture would eliminate a variable.

Thanks,
Lonni

I too have noticed performance issues with this new driver.

I ran "Scientific" benchmarks using Quake 4, UT2004, and Doom3, and with the previous drivers, I got these results:

Computer History:
AMD X2 4400
2 GIGs Ram
GeForce 7800 GTX PCI-X
Arch Linux Using Stock 2.6.16 kernel

Previous Driver
Quake4:
1600x1200 - 54 FPS

Doom3:
1600x1200 - 72 FPS

UT2004:
1920x1200 - 83 FPS

New Driver
Quake4:
1600x1200 - 24 FPS

Doom3:
1600x1200 - 48 FPS

UT2004:
1920x1200 - 53 FPS

Using the CK Kernel, there was some improvements in the "feel" of the game, but the FPS was smiler.

So, there is some differences between the driver versions.

Thats not even with Composite Enabled. With Composite, subtract about 10 fps from each of the new driver scores (Plus other issues).

Still patiently waiting for a bug fix release

Joe

OK, thanks. Not as detailed as I hoped but I've heard of some strange problems with PREEMPT in the past, too...so I'm gonna go on using it and being happy everything runs fine with PREEMPT for me
I hope I'm not annoying you with my questions, but thanks again anyway!

hello again, well i compiled the kernel now with out preemption and it got just worse ... now i just have 5-10fps everywhere and i cant exclude vesafb because without i cant compile the nvidia drivers on next boot with the fresh kernel ... maybe im standing in front of a wall and you have a clue for that ...

and last i dont play many other games all i can say is that i glxgears gives me same fps with 76.76 or 8x.xx

btw, LinuxRocks and me use the same distro ... and we both have slowdows ...
