I also experienece strange performance problems.

When running my System (2.6ghz Northwood, GF488Go 64Mb) under FC4 with the 7xxx series drivers I am able to play Quake3 without any problems with high resolution and a lot of details and now with stock OpenSuse-10.1/8762 I've reduce details etc. to an absolute minimum.

I don't have composite enabled nore other cpu intensive tasks, my kernel is an updated stock kernel compiled by SuSe ("2.6.16.13-4").

just 2 cents...
I've noticed, that latest driver (87.62) does not use MMX/3DNow/SSE/SSE2.
Thereforge, big performance drop on scenes with many geometry.

Strange i checked "Disable use of ..." in nvidia-settings and i played ET for a while - and there was no impact on fps. I was sure i got some fps drop, i even did /vid_restart and still no effect.

Conclusion: either this option doesn't work, or nvidia drivers doesn't use ehnaced CPU features.
