hi,
Every time i try to run nvidia-settings, i get the following errors: ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'. So I can't adjust brightness, contrast, etc on nvidia-settings. Any help? I have a 6600gt and I'm running Ubuntu 5.1 and the 8756 nvidia driver. thanks |

I suspect that you're not using the nvidia X driver. Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log
Thanks, Lonni |

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) is this the problem? if so, how can i solve it? and the log file is to big to post or attach here. |

You can zip the log to post it here. You might try (re)installing the driver first to see if that helps at all.
Thanks, Lonni |

Hi,
I'm seeing the similar issues as fablom. I, too, have a 6600GT card. I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and I am running a 32bit (K7) SMP kernel. I had no issues when using Breezy (5.10) I recently upgraded my Ubuntu installation to Dapper (6.06 I believe) in order to check out the compiz extensions (wonderful wobbly windows, etc.). That is when the issues arose. 1. Quake 4 would fail to load (seg. fault) just after a listing of the GL capabilities, Code:
...using GL_ARB_texture_cube_map ...using GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3 ...using GL_ARB_texture_env_add ...using GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two ...using GL_NV_blend_square X..GL_ARB_texture_compression not found signal caught: Segmentation fault si_code 1 Trying to exit gracefully.. Code:
$ nvidia-settings ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'. In my case, I have no errors in the xorg log file. However, the log file being written to is called Xorg.93.log which seems a little odd as I thought that the number on the log file would refer to the display (When I open a shell window, DISPLAY is ':0.0'). Perhaps it is a conflict between what is needed for compiz to work and the other GL stuff? I'm going try reenabling the nvidia-settings package (which will remove the nvidia-glx package) to see what effect it has. Cheers, |

The most likely reason for getting this error is not using the nvidia X driver. As I've already requested earlier, I'll need to see a bug report to diagnose this further.
Thanks, Lonni |

Ok,
I did the following: 1. Installed nvidia-settings - which removed nvidia-glx (sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings). 2. Shutdown the X server (ctrl-alt-backspace). 3. gdm tried to restart the xserver and failed - nvidia module not found - doh! 4. Reinstlalled the nvidia-glx driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx). 5. Logged in to the terminal 6. Stopped gdm (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop). 7. Started the X server by hand (startx) And, lo, I can now run nvidia-settings (Quake 4 too!). As a test I shut down the X server again and restarted gdm (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start). Back to the problems with nvidia-settings and quake 4 - maybe it is to do with that display :93.0 - I don't know. So, I expect that it is the change that were made to get compiz working in gnome that is hurting nvidia-settings. I'll look into it a bit more a little later. I'd like to have wobbly windows and working nvidia-settings at the same time. Anyone have any ideas how to approach this? Cheers, |

@DapperChap: `nvidia-settings` will not be able to communicate with the NVIDIA X driver if you're using XGL/`compiz`.
@zlibre: please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log file (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678). |

greetings all,
I am new to this forum, but came across this posting while looking to see how to resolve a problem that I have with my nVidia GeForce 5200 card on a Linux Fedora Core 5 machine running Xgl & Compiz. It appears that if I am running the standard x11 server then I can change things like the brightness, etc... through the nv-settings. but, if I switch into Xgl & Compiz server then I can no longer change the settings even though the drivers appear to be working but things are very dark and I need to adjust the brightness. Is there anything that can be done to fix this? I have the latest nvidia drivers as well. Cheers, Lonnie |
