X doesn't start - freezes in half black half white screen
Using the latest driver (8756) on an MX 440. After installation, the driver worked fine. Got into X and all was well. Next time I rebooted, when X started, it froze with the top half screen black and the lower half white. It looks like a text mode screen that freezes. Once this happens, I can't switch to other terminals.
More info: after installing the driver, I used 'startx -- -logverbose 5' (I had many probelms in the past, so I made sure I'll get all the information I can. Everything worked fine. I exited X and run nvidia-bug-report. It's attached as part of attached zip file: nvidia-bug-report.0.after-install.log.
I rebooted (into console mode), and used 'startx -- -logverbose 5', and this time X couldn't start (getting the B/W screen). I used SSH from another computer to generate the bug report - nvidia-bug-report.1.after-install.log in the attached zip file. I also tried one last time by changing /etc/inittab to start X automatically, but again, it didn't start. The bug report after this attempt is in nvidia-bug-report.2.last-attempt.log in the zip file.
Changing "nvidia" to "vesa", I can start X without any problem, but, of course, the driver is really slow.
Has anyone encountered this problem? Any suggestions for further investigation?
