Greetings all from Australia!
I have installed the FreeBSD nVidia driver 1.0-8178 built from source and BSD patches from the updated /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver directory. OS is FreeBSD 6.0, clean off a new distributor DVD, but with Gnome updated fully to 2.12. The issue is that after a random amount of time, from almost right away after starting X to many hours later, the display freezes, and indeed the whole system locks up tight, and needs a hardware reset to restart. My UFS filesystems are not happy about this arrangement There are no diagnostic messages or errors of any type anywhere in any logs that I can locate. I note that this behaviour is very similar to another posting in this newsgroup. At first I thought this matter was due to using a twin screen configuration, but after experiment, it turns out that this occurs with either TwinView enabled or not. The system has an MSI graphics card, chip: nVidia Corporation NV28 [GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x] rev 161, successfully used with nVidia drivers for other OS's in twinview configuration for quite a few years. I do not experience any such issue using the vanilla nv driver, only with the nvidia driver. Do any of the good folks at nVidia have any idea what may be happening? Reading this newsgroup, I get the feeling that this defect is a common thread that is emerging. Since I am relatively new to FreeBSD, I am not certain what collateral debug/diagnostic information would be useful to post here. Perhaps others could suggest what to provide. Of course, it is indeed necessary to register thanks to nVidia for bothering to support this fine operating system. This is appreciated, and thoughtful and farsighted of nVidia Corporation. This has to be repeated often, because it is very special, and I reckon many folks really do appreciate this a lot. Thanks people. Any ideas, though? Any pointers would be terrific! A bit like having a Ferrari, but stuck in the workshop all the time! Andrew Bernard Melbourne, Australia |

Kind of the same problem here: using freebsd-6.1-release (6.0 release showed the same
problems) on a MSI K8T Neo2 (Via k8t800pro chipset) using Geforce 6600. I get system freezes from time to time which let me refuse to do my work. I am using xinerama (twinview shows the same problems), have a kernel w/o 'device agp' line running. I told Xorg to use nvidias AGP driver (NvAGP "1") but it obviously doesn't. hw.nvidia.agp.card.rates: 8x 4x hw.nvidia.agp.card.fw: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.sba: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.registers: 0xff000e1b:0x00000000 hw.nvidia.agp.status.status: disabled hw.nvidia.agp.status.driver: n/a (unused) hw.nvidia.agp.status.rate: n/a (disabled) hw.nvidia.agp.status.fw: n/a (disabled) hw.nvidia.agp.status.sba: n/a (disabled) hw.nvidia.version: NVIDIA FreeBSD x86 Kernel Module 1.0-8756 Wed Mar 29 15:22:41 PST 2006 Using FreeBSDs AGPGart driver seems to even be worse. As it is now I get around 1500 fps in glxgears and X freezes often. The logs don't show any information regarding these freezes but lines like this when freezing: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 2, CCMDs 00000000 0000004d 00000214 06f40000 00000006 NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 3, C 00000002 SC 00000005 M 000002fc Data 00000001 X logs only mention that X was told to use the nv AGP driver but there is no validation that it's indeed doing so. I would be very happy if anyone had any idea. thanks in advance |

Hello,
I am currently using FreeBSD 6.1 on a ASUS A8V K8T800Pro chipset with an EVGA GeForce 6600 AGP. I had a similar problem: each time I used an OpenGL application using the nvidia driver the computer would completely freeze within a few minutes (sometimes a few seconds ...) I played with the various AGP options in the BIOS and then upgraded my PSU to an Antec NeoHe 500W. No effect. I decided to disconnect the supplemental power adapter (at the back of the card) to see if would make a difference... and bingo! The card now runs at a lower speed but no more freezes! I'm using the latest driver from nVidia: hw.nvidia.agp.card.rates: 8x 4x hw.nvidia.agp.card.fw: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.sba: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.registers: 0xff000e1b:0x00000000 hw.nvidia.agp.status.status: disabled hw.nvidia.agp.status.driver: n/a (unused) hw.nvidia.agp.status.rate: n/a (disabled) hw.nvidia.agp.status.fw: n/a (disabled) hw.nvidia.agp.status.sba: n/a (disabled) hw.nvidia.version: NVIDIA FreeBSD x86 Kernel Module 1.0-8762 Mon May 15 14:07:12 PDT 2006 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableVia4x: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableALiAGP: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.NvAGP: 1 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableAGPSBA: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableAGPFW: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.SoftEDIDs: 1 hw.nvidia.registry.Mobile: 4294967295 hw.nvidia.registry.ResmanDebugLevel: 4294967295 hw.nvidia.registry.FlatPanelMode: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.DevicesConnected: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.VideoEnhancement: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.RmLogonRC: 1 hw.nvidia.registry.DetectPrimaryVga: 1 hw.nvidia.cards.0.model: GeForce 6600 hw.nvidia.cards.0.irq: 16 hw.nvidia.cards.0.vbios: 05.43.02.64.00 hw.nvidia.cards.0.type: AGP |
