Default NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756 randomly freezes Xorg with 2.6.16.9 kernel

When I've switched to vanilla 2.6.16.9 from plain 2.6.16, I've passed from 8178 to 8756. Everything seems to go on properly: module compiles and runs perfectly on kernel. But sometimes Xorg (6.9) freezes and nothing is possible but reboot. Mouse cursor doesn't move and the desktop remains freezed. It's not anything due to some application running: infact it happens randomly even when the system is in idle mode (not running nothing like video players or something else). Driver is certainly the trouble: infact now I'm running stable using vesa mode.

Harware & software details:
mb: Abit K7V
cpu: Sempron 2400+
ram: 768MB DDR400
os: Linux Slackware current fork
kernellain vannilla 2.6.16.9
driver:NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756
log errors: nothing! System leaves no error on log files: maybe the freeze is too "bad" ;-)

Any idea?

I have this problem too. My system is the same as yours... Maybe there is some incompatibility?

I'm running the same configuration - except with Slackware 10.2. I've been using the system heavily since yesterday when I installed the .9 kernel and it hasn't happened to me yet. If It does, I'll give an update...

Maybe there's something which conflicts with Xorg 6.9 for Slackware... If there's some admin who knows something about that, it would be appreciated. Thinking at it, I've remembered that the same thing occured when I patched the previous version of the driver (8178) just after upgrading to 2.6.16.9. So it seems to be something that goes wrong with that kernel and the 8xxx series. I cannot use the previous drivers with this kernel (module wouldn't compile) and I don't want to get back to the 2.6.16 plain vanilla... So I will go on with vesa until they release a patch or something else solving the problem.
To marik.te.ua: let me now if you find out something interesting...

My solution was to switch to kernel 2.6.16.11 and everything works fine

Actually, I observed this behaviour randomly when upgrading nvidia drivers on the same kernel. If you install same nvidia drivers on tke same kernel version but fresh kernel install (in your case 2.6.16.9) you will not observe any problems with freezing. I guess nvidia installer changes enough, and drivers changes enough to cause this sort of problems.

Hello,

I experienced similar freeze and found this thread with google, so here are my experiences.

This happened with SuSE 10.0 OSS and kernel 2.6.13-15.8-default. Display adapter is GF Ti4800. VIA motherboard with P4x266 chipset and Intel Celeron 2GHz, running at 100x20.

I just upgraded my Nvidia drivers to 8756 with kernel upgrade. And after few hours first freeze occured, I blamed cedega, but apparently it wasn't the reason. For second freeze it took 20 hours or more, so there is no pattern.

Today I was burning some dvd's and reading email, and again desktop freezed. I had a laptop with me so I plugged it in and ssh'd to the freezed computer. EVERYTHING was running fine, my dvd burned successfully, I could even change through virtual consoles (keyboard leds changed accordingly) but could not see anything but black screen in my display.

Then suddenly my screensaver came visible, but that is only thing I could see. If I killed it, the screen remained blank and after a while it eventually came back, so I think this eliminates some hardware problems at least? My friend reported to noticed exactly the sambe behaviour with some fx -series card.

I switched to runlevel3 to see if it helps when reloading nvidia drivers, back to runlevel 5 and X is now running happy, but no picture on the screen. No errors on any log's so this is actually kind of strange. Sync signals come ok as my monitor sees the correct resolution, but the image is blank. (Note: The resolution my monitor sees is the resolution used in X, so changin to different vt doesn't change that)

I think this isn't much help, but it seems that reboot is only thing I can do. hopefully someone can figure out a way to fix this.

jsk,
Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,

There is a lot of reports of crashes with 8756, downgrade to 8178 and everything is fine again. That's my recommendation! I had a lot of problems with 8756 and no problems at all with the old drivers as I have gone back to now.
