Default GeForce4 440 Go Problems in a Toshiba laptop

Hello!

I have a Toshiba 1995 laptop. The lspci gives this information about my nvidia card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go] (rev a3)

Before I begin I have to say that I've installed nvidia drivers a lot of times in the past, but never for a laptop. I have good knowledge of XF86Config file too (I hope!)

I tried to use the nvidia drivers but I experienced the following problem: although the driver is working and the hardware acceleration is enabled, the screen doesn't go full screen. Instead it drops the resolution to nnot maximum than 800x600. I tried to manually force the resolution to higher rates but with no luck. It's like the monitor does not support it, which is not right, since it is a LCD with resolution of 1280x1024.

Later on I tried to use the open source driver. The strange thing is that with *these* I was lucky! I had full screen without any problem. Not hardware acceleration though, which was disappointing.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Default U up and running?

Just wanted to let you know that I have my Toshiba 1955-S803 up and running RedHat Linux 8.0. If you have figured your's out yet. Mine does have hardware acceleration but not at fullscreen playing games. Other than that everything desktop wise fits perfectly. If you need help let me know. I am willing to help you in any way.

Unhappy still nothing

No, unfortunately I was not able to solve it. Maybe it's something with the configuration. I'd be glad to hear what kind of configuration you have (and maybe send me your XF86Config file and tell me which version of nvidia drivers do you use)

My email is

thanks!

Default I'll have that stuff to you in a jiffy....

Teras,
I'll have that stuff for you as quick as possible. I am going to write a step-by-step manual for all the toshiba 1955-S803 users running Red Hat 8.0. Hope this helps everyone.

Thanks,
David

Thank you for your reply and the files you sent to me. It is a good idea to post them anywhere you like, so that other people with the same problems as I might be able to solve it.

By diff-ing my configuration and yours I found that I missed an option under "Monitor" section, as follows:

Option "DDC" "Off"

All other options were more or less the same as mine.

Now I can have full screen with accelerated drivers. I suspect that I (we) miss some features, but since it's working, I don't mind.

Thank you again for the instructions!
