Default Constantly have to reinstall Driver on Ubuntu Breezy

ok, here it the main gist of what is happening.

I compiled my own kernel for use on Breezy since the Ubuntu compiled ones don't support my mouse and other hardware. I had installed the Graphics driver that I downloaded from Nvidia. Here are the steps I have to take everytime I reboot the system:

sudo killall gdm
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1.run
sudo gdm restart

it goes through the process and installs the module. if I reboot I have to start the process all over again. Any ideas on how I can fix this.

system specs.
AMD Athlon Duron XP
Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger
512mb pc2700 Ram
40gig HDD
Nvidia mx/mx 400 geforce2
Gigabyte 7VT600P-RZ mobo

below you will find my Kernel config and my nvidia-installer log
Attached Files
File Type: log nvidia-installer.log (25.4 KB, 128 views)
File Type: txt myconfig.txt (36.2 KB, 130 views)

Almost sounds like a problem I had once upon a time in Debian. Put nvidia on a line by itself in the file /etc/modules just to make sure it gets loaded on boot. You may also want to check that /etc/modprobe.d/aliases has a line like this in it.

Code:
alias char-major-195-* nvidia

I'm not sure what you meant with this part though, sorry still a bit of a newbie on some linux stuff.

Edit the file /etc/modules and put the word nvidia on a line by itself then save and close the file.

oh that, lmao, I already tried that route. sorry, I have like 50 millions things running through my head right now. And all of them are revolving around this one issue. just can't get them organized into a single line of thought.

In that case there is only a couple of ideas I have then. The first is udev which I believe it uses you may want to do some checking into whether the proper links are being created when you boot. The second their should be a way to get the driver source from their repositories and use module assistant to compile the driver version specific to your kernel. Another thing look in /lib/modules/'uname -r'/nvidia/nvidia.ko canging the 'uname -r' in the line to the output of the uname -r command to check to see if the module is their after a reboot if so then try either modprobe nvidia or modprobe -f nvidia to see if loading it will allow you to start the gdm.

This sounds like a known problem in Debian-based distributions when the NVIDIA driver packages are still installed. Try completely removing the Ubuntu driver packages and then running the .run installer again.

Have you removed linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`? I use Ubuntu (recently upgraded from Breezy to Dapper) and have never had the problem you are reporting.

Perhaps post the output of "dpkg -l|grep -i nvidia && dpkg -l|grep -i linux"?

Yes, all linux-restricted-modules are removed. that was one of the steps I did from the beginning.

here is my output of dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia && dpkg -l | grep -i.

Remove 'nvidia-glx' you are trying to run 7667 with 8756. When you re-run the installation process I believe it rmmod's 7667 and loads 8756. Upon reboot 7667 is reloaded; rinse-repeat.

I also noticed your are running a 386 kernel, AFAIK you should be using 686 with the Duron for better performance (someone correct me if I am wrong, I'm an Intel guy).
