Default 30 second freezes, 7600GT, 1.0.8756

I recently got my 7600GT back from a friend who I'd swapped for a 6800GS while I awaited the new drivers. The 6800GS ran flawlessly on the older version of the drivers (1.0.8178).

This new card, coupled with the new drivers (1.0.8756), is giving me grief.

When I fire up Quake 3 I can play for a couple minutes and then the game will freeze for 30 seconds to a minute with the sound skipping and the graphics locked up. It will then recover and allow me to play for a few minutes before freezing again.

I don't know if this is a bad card or a driver issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a non-PREEMPT enabled kernel (from kernel.org)?
1) What else is running on your system while you are playing the game?
2) Are you running this game across both videocards or just one? Does this reproduce if you are only using one videocard in X?
3) What kind of motherboard and BIOS version are you using?

Thanks,
Lonni

I had a similar problem. I have been running an XFX 6600GT on a ASUS A832N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. I tried to replace it with a BFG 7600GT OC, 2 weeks ago.

It ran great , except every 2-10 minutes, it would blink. A momentary blink(like you just blinked your eyes).

At the time I was not running any games. As a matter of fact, it would do it while I was just staring at a quiescent system.

I swapped back and forth between 6600GT and 7600GT 3 times. 6600GT always ran without a glitch. 7600GT would blink within 10 minutes.

Athlon 64 X2 4400+.
2GB Ram.

sony 23" 1920x1200 ann ViewSonic 1600x1200.
Both are single link DVI. Kinda sounds like TMDS timing ???

Linux hostname 2.6.16-20-smp #1 SMP Mon Apr 10 04:51:13 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I finally took the card back to CompUSA an hour ago...

FWIW....

0) I have not tried without PREEMPT because you can't turn off PREEMPT on a multiprocessor system
1) I have run it with nothing else at all running really.. startx from a console and quake3.x86 or quake4.x86 in my .xinitrc so there's not even a window manager running
2) I'm using only one video card for games. I have tried it with the MX4000 PCI card as a secondary card for my desktop, and the 6600 PCI-E card in my system as a secondary card for the desktop. When I run games I start a new X with only the 7600GT active. I have also tried it with no secondary video card in my system at all and same results.
3) Asus A8N32-SLI board (updated to latest BIOS by Memory Express where I purchased it) with AMD Athlon X2 4400+, 500 W Enermax PSU, matched 1 gig sticks of Crucial RAM. I have also tried with an Enermax 350 W PSU, and matched 1 gig sticks of Kingston RAM. I ALSO (I've been fighting with this a LOT) tried a 6600 and a 6800GS card. Neither of those cards have any problems.

I took it back to the store today to show them the problem but they only wanted to run through their "standard" testing procedure (not see it on my Linux system), which means looping the card through 3DMark. It supposedly scored decently but I have no idea if it was locking and then returning like I experience because their techs weren't watching the test run, so I got sent home with my useless card.

What I *wanted* them to do is let me show them the lockups. Then stick an identical 7600 in the system and see if it still does it. That would allow me to rule out hardware issues.

Ok, your questions lead me to a bunch more testing.. Here's what I've done.

I downloaded 2.6.16.11 from kernel.org and created an extremely limited kernel. I left out both PREEMPT and SMP support. I also, just for fun, removed the other graphics card from my system again leaving only the 7600GT, and I also removed the sound card leaving me with nothing but the 7600GT in the system. I then booted into single user mode and ran Quake 3 single player. I get the same thing after a couple minutes. My system freezes right up.

I've attached the kernel config and the ps output to show what was running at the time (nothing).

Oh, one other tidbit.

The BIOS is an American Megatrends AMIBIOS revision 1103

Does booting with the noapic, acpi=off and/or pci=conf1 kernel parameters have any impact?

Which BIOS version are you currently using?

Incidentally, I don't believe that PREEMPT has any association with SMP support.

Thanks,
Lonni

From the BIOS page I get:

AMIBIOS
Version: 1103
Build Date: 01/02/06

Here's the result of the testing you asked me to do. These were done with the minimal kernel.org kernel I built as above.

noapic acpi=off pci=conf1 freeze
1 0 0 y
0 1 0 *
0 0 1 y
0 1 1 *
1 1 0 y
1 0 1 y

* No freeze with these settings. However, I could not test them well because my USB system shuts down about a minute into play and I can't play any longer.

Just an off the wall idea..

Is there any way to probe the GPU temperature?

I could write a small bash script that I can leave running in the background to record the temperature every second to a file while I play. Maybe it's getting to a certain temperature and then the freezing starts?

I was going to mention that when I run the game with the normal SMP and PREEMPT kernel I can usually recover from the freeze. It will freeze for 30 seconds a couple times, and usually the third or so time I can never recover. That got me to thinking that it could be heat related because with the stock kernel I can never recover but that could be because I've been running the game over and over and the temp on the GPU is already higher to start.

I did check the fan and it's turning normally.

nvidia-settings will probe the GPU temperature for cards that support it.

Thanks,
Lonni

Unless there's a way to use nvidia-settings as a command line tool it's not too useful for this application.

nvidia-settings can be used as a command line tool. Please see its man page for more information.

Thanks,
Lonni
