Default X freezes after reboot

Hi,

I always have the same Problem with my GeForce FX 5200. When I switch on my computer after he was switched off for some time, he boots normally. But on starting X it freezes when the KDE startup screen appears (mostly it just appears partially) and I can't do anything than to exit X (I did't try ssh, since I had no possibility). When I press the reset button (crtl-alt-del doesn't work...) and boot again then it work flawlessly, every time. I can exit X and restart X again, do a soft reboot and start X again. Even when I do a poweroff and switch it on again after about 10 seconds, it still works flawlessly. It never crashed during an X session and everything works without problem (even playing OpenGL games for quite some time).

I'm using the 8756 version of the nvidia module, a 2.6.16 kernel and modular Xorg 7.0 (I also tried with no success Xorg 6.8 and kernels from 2.6.11). To me it seems like the card crashes when it gets initialized but then remembers the state and works without problems. I had a look at the thread http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=69477, but the problem didn't get solved for me... (I have the Antialiasing stuff switched of by default in nvidia-settings, and the module is loaded on each startup).

I attached the nvidia-bug-report just before I started X and it crashed ("crashing") and after a reboot with working X as well as with X running and without X running ("working" and "working_without_X").

Any suggestions?

You are running an old 5xxx series driver. Please try the latest version.

Or more to the point you seem to be running with a mix of kernel module and driver.

The kernel module appears to be 8756 but the driver library is 5336. I think on many levels that's far worse...

No, I'm not running a mix of versions! The old setup with the 5336 driver is from Xfree86.0.log, which I didn't use since about a two years! Just have a look at the kernel module and XOrg.0.log and the version of the kernel module!

I don't see anything crashing in the bug reports you posted.

You don't see anything crashing, since it crashes afterwards with a freeze, and I can't start nvidia-bugreport if I can't access any console. I am not able to try ssh access, since I don't have another computer at hand (but when I can borrow one, I will tell you). Actually, I already explained the meaning of the logfiles in the first post!

petruu, is this an Asus K8N motherboard you're using? If so, can you try updating the BIOS to the latest available?

Additionally, please test whether this problem reproduces if you disable the console framebuffer graphics.

Thanks,
Lonni

Dude, For the benefit of others, can you elaborate on how you got it to work?

I tried today, and I'm not able to login via ssh... So no logs for the crash...

Any Ideas? What could I do to get more information? It really is a regular crash, so it happens any time when I could boot after the computer was off for some time...
