Default GeForce 7800 GS (AGP!!) = disappointment

Admittedly I should have done more research on this card prior to dropping nearly 350 bones on it. It was a spontaneous decision, figuring either I could upgrade my aging AGP video hardware or I could save up for a PCI-e/SLI system.

Well, hindsight is 20/20 and I should've done the latter. /cry

I'm somewhat confused as to why Nvidia took a 7800 GPU and slapped it on an aging bus. Unfortunately for my wallet I didn't know that the bus itself would turn out to be the bottleneck. I bought the 7800 to replace my 6600 and, lemme tell ya, there's not much of an improvement. I got a handful (less than 10) extra FPS out of WoW (under Wine) and quake4 (native linux binary) with the same video settings. /sigh

As far as system specs:
kernel 2.6.16.14 (vanilla sources)
NVidia drivers 8756
1GB ram
3.0GHz P4 CPU (hyperthreaded, of course)
blah blah yada yada.

Interested to see what other people get with this card (BFG 7800 GS, overclock-able), if there is any other *cough cough* sucker *cough cough* out there with it. I average about 30FPS in WoW @ 1280x1024 res in most areas. Some places it plummets into the low teens. This is with the card not overclocked. Sure this could be a Wine-ism; the point is that the performance gain is minimal when compared to a 6600 that costs 1/2 as much.

Save your money. Go PCI-e/SLI. Nvidia will like this more anyway.

Cheers,
Keith

I get decent performance out of mine, an XFX 7800 AGP. As I don't play WoW I can't compare to that benchmark. In Doom 3 I get 73 fps @ 1024x768, 2xFSAA. Heaps more than the 5900.

I'm pretty sure the bus isn't the limitation. I remember at least that the 6800GTX didn't come close to saturating the AGP 8x bus.

And this very well may be the case. I'm just baffled by the lack of marked improvement over the 6600, using a Wine-ified WoW as the test. Would be nice if Blizzard released the Linux client that they had in the works 2 years ago; would be brainless to do considering there's a Mac client.

Anyway I see better improvement in quake4. 1280x1024 res, medium q4 grafx settings, averaging around 40fps which is much better than before. Helps to have native binaries, I guess.

/sigh

chances are the graphics card isn't the bottleneck then :/

AGP 8x is definately not a bottleneck when it comes to performance. I can imagine you would benefit from a faster CPU, but I find it very strange that you don't see better framerates going from a 6600... Are you using the latest BIOS for your MB?
Do you have a Windows installation you could check out 3dmark in?

Hi!

Did you have tasted the older 8178 drivers with the new card? When i understand the posts in this thread

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=69546

there is a bug in the new driver which slows down the performance of the nvidia cards...

With my evga 7800 GS Co- Edition i have i have 50-60 fps @ 1280x1024 and high settings in quake4 with the old 8178 drivers, with the new drivers i have 40-50 fps @ the same settings with the new drivers...

A 6800U would probably outperform a 7800GS AGP, the 6800GT almost matches the thing sure. NVIDIA really screwed up bigtime on the 7800GS, and should of used a 7800GT G80 GPU that isn't as crippled as the one they slapped in the 7800GS. You get a lesser performing card for more money? Whatever...

Whats funny is the lack of comparisons around the big name review sites that compare a 6800U with a 7800GS. Whats NVIDIA got to hide here?

I've been Windows-free for the past 6 or so years. I don't have access to a Windows box w/ an AGP bus, unfortunately. The only one within reach is PCI-e.

This machine is about 2 years old. It's a Dell Dimension 360 N series. I had to slap in a new 400 watt power supply along w/ the new card. This card has rediculous power requirements; the minimum requirements call for a power supply w/ a 12V output current of 20 amps. I've never seen a power supply put out that much current. Whatever.

As for the BIOS, it's as current as it's gonna get. The last BIOS release was in 2004. I grabbed it back then.

I'd love to run a benchmark if there is such a thing for Linux. I'm sure Nvidia has some.........

Wow, interesting. Was unaware of this. I'll give it a shot now and see

The bug being referenced is specific to SpecViewPerf with a Quadro FX 4500. There isn't a known globally applicable bug that slows down performance across all applications and/or all videocards in 1.0-8756.

Thanks,
Lonni

netlama it would be really cool if you would take another look at it
