I'm having a problem. glxgears gives approximately 10 fps, but glxinfo says direct rendering: yes. I have a 6600gt with kernel 2.6.16 on debian sid, with the latest drivers. What could possible be wrong?

glxgears is not a benchmark tool. Download quake3 demo or something like that instead and test with that. I suspect that glxgears can even differ from distro to distro. And the "aprox. 10 fps" was that with the -printfps or just by looking at it? (it looks to be slow).
If you just installed the card, did you remember to plug in the power connector? |

6600GT just uses the pci-e bus for power

I know it's not a benchmark, but I'm getting ~10 fps (with -printfps) whereas before I had something closer to a12ctic's. I recently purchased another PSU, so I'll check that, but the card does have a power cord connected...I just checked.
![]() I'm downloading Quake 2 right now, but I'm on dialup. I'll reply with an FPS from that. Is there a proper video benchmarking tool for Linux? Thanks for the reply! |

Re: Quake. the shareware download is 40mb. That's a long time on my crappy dialup. Is there another way of getting a benchmark? Any other (smaller) games? Thanks.

There is viewperf, which is in the 100'ish MB.
40MB is not alot for a graphics benchmark tool. |

I have a 6600GT AGP as well and it does have a (drive-style) extra power connector. glxgears gives me more than 6900 FPS, but when I enable "sync to vblank" the FPS drops to the vertical refresh rate (60). As could be expected. |

Lithorus: Ok, ok, I'm downloading Quake. And I thought Quake was a game, not a benchmark
.pe1chl: It is connected. I meant I'll check the PSU with a voltmeter. I don't believe I have "sync to vblank" enabled, but how do I tell? Thanks! |

Ah I misread it...
You can start nvidia-settings and check the GL settings. |

Well, i just checked Quake2, and with the OpenGL GLX video mode, at 1280x1024 (my native resolution) with 8-bit textures and max texture quality, I get a constant 5fps. It doesn't change, it stays at 5 no matter what I do.
pe1chl: nvidia-settings acts exactly as if everything were fine...I'm not sure where to look, but I don't see anything big and attention-grabbing. I'm checking my PSU tonight... |
