Default Computer freezes when OpenGL application run

Whenever an OpenGL application is run on my gf's computer it freezes after a couple minutes. This will happen by running anything that uses OpenGL at all, from glxgears, to Quake 4. Attached is a nvidia-bug-report generated log. The only thing wrong is if I run the OpenGL application and kill it in enough time this shows in the dmesg

Code:
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 29,  L2 -> L1
Could someone please help us, I have no idea whats wrong, everything seems correct.

Thanks

nuke

welcome to the club. But I am amazed because your card is 7800 not the 6600!

This happens on her computer not mine. Here are her system specs

Dell Dimention (I dont know the model)
Intel P-4 1.7ghz
768megs of RDRAM
eVGA 5900 Ultra
Sound Blaster Live!
Intel mobo
Running Gentoo 2006.0 ~x86

I found that once I went to PCI-X the problem went away. Infact she hasnt had this problem until now.

nukem,
I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a non-ck kernel?
1) Does this reproduce without Coolbits?
2) What kind of motherboard & BIOS version are you using?

Thanks,
Lonni

This looks suspiciously like the lockups I started to get - and was made worse by getting a new card.

My problem was using 4xAGP !! I turned it off in BIOS and use 2xAGP now, and system is solid as a rock now.

So try using 2xAGP - also you will not notice any difference between 4x/2x AGP anyway.

This also happens on the Gentoo sources, with or without coolbits(I never overclocked I just had it so I could see what it was in nvidia-settings). The system is a Dell Dimension 8200 using the Dell motherboard based on the Intel 850 or 850E chipset with the latest BIOS installed(A09).

Lethe: I looked in her BIOS to see if I could switch to AGP 2x mode and its a no go. Dell limited all your options to very basic ones.

I was just looking through her Xorg.log file and I saw this. What the hell does that mean?

Code:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) NVIDIA(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000

Default Re: Computer freezes when OpenGL application run

I just tried it with the pervious nvidia driver and using NvAGP 1 both did not work. According to my dmesg NvAGP didn't even load, it just gave this message

Code:
NVRM: not using NVAGP, an AGPGART backend is loaded!

It seems these Dell BIOS are pretty much pants.

The error you see above is due to AGPGART module being already loaded.

Anyway, just to check this is caused by AGP, turn off agp module usage:

"NvAGP 0"

Just to see if it still locks up.

Ill have her try that today when she gets home but we realised something last night thats a bit distrubing. On both Windows and Linux the screen will blink off for a tenth of a second. She has a TV hooked up to her computer as well and the TV does not flicker. Is this just the monitor going or could it be something else?

Ok we tried it. Using NvAGP "0" does take away crashing issues. We were able to run glxgears for about 10min and then tried quake 3 which ran fine. The only thing that crashed(just the game not the system) was War Craft III via cedega, but thats probably because of something cedega was trying to do with AGP. Still when running any game this shows up the the dmesg

Code:
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 29,  L2 -> L1
When War Craft III crashed this showed up

Code:
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000002
So what does this mean? Should I try to take AGP out of the kernel and only use NvAGP?

Thanks

nuke

I doubt using the nvAGP in lieu of AGPGART will stop the crashes.

There is one more thing to try - drop the agp aperture to 64MB in BIOS - or maybe even try 32MB (or set it to what the BIOS default is)
