Default Need help installing latest Fedora 5/nVidia graphics driver

Hi,

I've done some reading around here, and I have a general idea of what I'm up against to get this thing working. However, I need some hand-holding to fix this, because I don't know what (exactly) I've done wrong.

As far as I can tell, I followed the instructions in "HOWTO: Installing the nvidia X driver in Fedora Core 5" to the letter; I also installed the additional libraries and whatnot to give the driver installer what it needs. I may have installed things out of order, and telling yum to update things, including the kernel, returns the message that it's ALREADY updated.

I'm so lost.

Attached are the log files (I think) I've seen requested before. Let me know if you need anything else.

Appreciate the help,
nchrisb
Attached Files
File Type: log nvidia-installer.log (2.7 KB, 178 views)
File Type: log Xorg.0.log (44.4 KB, 148 views)

Looking at GRUB's menu, I'm using the 2.6.16-1.2111_FC5 kernel. I'm at a loss as to how to provide information on the other stuff needed. Could I get some help?

Appreciate the assistance,

@nchrisb: the kernel source files appear to be unavailable; please make sure you have the kernel-devel package for the running kernel installed on your system.

Huh? That doesn't make sense; when I look at the GNOME package manager, it tells me that "kernel-devel - 2.6.16-1.2111_FC5.i586 - Development package for building kernel modules to match the kernel." is installed! What the?

I swear also that I used

yum install kernel-devel

at the command line (when X/Gnome isn't running) to install this. What do I type at the prompt to get for you a "log" (or text display piped to a file) of what happens with the above "yum" command?

That's your problem. That directory is part of the kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2111_FC5 RPM. I can't tell you why its missing on your system, as it exists on my FC5 (x86) systems. You can try reinstalling that RPM, or contacting a FC support resource.

I would guess I'm good to go. I'll post the output from trying to install the driver later.

Thanks for your help!

Default Re: Need help installing latest Fedora 5/nVidia graphics driver

I DID get the nVidia driver to compile, but afterwards, X/GNOME refused to run. I switched X configuration files to try to get X to run, which it did, but sort of blew up the window manager.

I figured I didn't have the Linux skills to get you an error log AND run X at the same time (maybe I should've waited and asked?), so I decided to completely re-install Fedora 5, and try to install all the packages needed to compile/install the nVidia drivers. I'm going to use this post as a reference point for the things I may need.

The other possibility, I suppose, is to use a different Linux distribution (i.e., SuSE). Barring that, since I get impatient trying to scale Linux's seemingly Mount Everest-size learning curve, I may give up for a while (sigh).

Thanks for the assistance,
nchrisb

P. S.

After re-installing:

I tried this all over again--with exactly the same result. The window manager in X is "broken." Once again, I lack the Linux skills (and patience, I think) to fix this. Any suggestions?
