While I agree with what you're saying (FC6 will most likely the first major distro to ship with 7.1... and it's at least four months away), one cannot escape the consequences of having a constant friction between open and closed source development visions.
Linux users are used to an open development environment, with access to stable, unstable and testing trees while nVidia is used to a closed development environment, where stable drivers are designed to fully support stable platforms.

nVidia can ease the problem by granting public access to their beta/pre-release drivers and bugzilla database.
Come to think about it, maybe it'll be wise for nVidia to inspect VMWare's Server open beta program. (Which seems to be highly effective in helping VMWare release a better product).

I'm not trying to reopen the "nVidia open source driver" argument again (God no!). I just point'em as I see'em.

X.org 7.1 IS stable.
Next ubuntu release will be done in ~7 days, so there won't be X.org 7.1 included.

The new driver works with Xorg 7.1, though in some cases you have to disable Render acceleration. It's not a big loss.

The problem is that the API change happened 1.5 month ago, and it's weird that for 1.5 month nobody did fix that. Especially since the changes are trivial, and would took probably half an hour.

As somebody else pointed out, RENDER acceleration "works" if you enable subpixel hinting. Of course, this could just be because the acceleration is automatically disabled when subpixel hinting is enabled ;-)

I'm running KDE 3.5.2 happily on Xorg 7.1 with the latest NVIDIA driver with no config hacks.

NVIDIA is a big company, they probably have all sorts of silly QA processes that prevent bugs like this from being fixed in a timely fashion. My guess is that the minute they put out 8762, they fixed the ABI issues in their development driver.

It's just how corporations build software. It's not like an OSS software development process.

Ahhh, I wonder me about this message: (pirate)

Code:
(EE) ============= WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING =============
(EE) This server has a video driver ABI version of 1.0 but this
(EE) driver is designed to work with versions before 1.0. The
(EE) driver will continue to load, but may behave strangely.
(EE) Please check http://www.nvidia.com/ for driver updates or
(EE) downgrade to an X server with a supported driver ABI.
(EE) ===========================================================
Bad very bad... ok, then the next release will be in ~ in August/Septembre? Happy birthday... what is slower? An nNidia linux driver developer or a turtle?

May I repeat the answer from nVidia (developer posters) in the past here, that the next driver release (means the one now) has support for aiglx
Where is it boys?

Who should believe these lies?...

No one from NVIDIA has ever stated on this forum that 1.0-8762 would have aiglx support.

Thanks,
Lonni

I back you Lonni, ever since I remember you always been saying that its planned beyond 8xxx, *not* in 8xxx. Period.

The rumor mill strikes. Phoronix is great for starting that stuff.

Impressions? Mixed.

Stability seems great, the massive memory leak in the release before last's is still fixed, overclocking works again on 6200A boards, that weird issue I was having where X would start then die and my TV would flash green and the LCD pink also hasn't shown back up.

I'm not that happy about the release cycle, and how trivial things arn't fixed, ie, LCD scaling still seems to not work properly at all...

I'm beginning to think it's a clever ploy for Nvidia to get me to buy some top of the line 7xxx card that can handle gaming in 1280x1024.

I'm sure the next release will have LCD scaling fixed, but something else will be broken. :sigh:
