Default Problems reading .nvidia-settings.rc

Hi,
I tried to install the latest nvidia-driver on "ubuntu dapper drake" (RC1) but it doesn't work (logfile says something about a kernel-Problem) so I went back to NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1 which worked fine on my former breezy-installation and so does under dapper now.

Unfortunately I get the following error when I try to load the configuration-file:

Error parsing configuration file '/home/fmayer/.nvidia-settings-rc' on line 36: '0/RedBrightness=-0.160000' (Trailing garbage).

After deletig the file and creating of a new one the error still exists. The file is readeble ans looks - as far as I can see - pretty good.

Btw., I am using utf-8-encoding - may this be a problem? Does anyone has an idea?

Thanx,
Frank

Hardware: Samsung M50, NVidia 6600 Go (IIRC)

i have the same problem!
the funny thing is:
when user root executes "nvidia-settings" everything is fine!

What happens if you keep the _same_ rc file and just delete the '0/RedContrast=0.000000' line?

If you then get the same again, repeat. You will find the offending line (a <CR>, I bet.).

when i delete the line the nvidia-settings-tool complains about the next "Contrast-line" (Red, Green, Blue). when i delete all the "Contrast-lines" it complains about the gamma-lines.
when i delete all the lines under '0/RedContrast=0.000000' it starts silently.
but when i quit the nvidia-settings-tool it adds all the lines again.
and complains about them on the next start....

my current workaround is to start the tool as user root. (with sudo su -c ...)

this works.

Hi,

I had the same problem.
It is caused by the language settings.

I start nvidia-settings with the following script:

#!/bin/bash

export LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-1
nvidia-settings

Then nvidia-settings works without problems. So no need to run as root.

Regards,
Christian

perfect solution!
and if you add the
Code:
$@
special-variable to the call of nvidia-settings you can even pass the arguments (-a or -l or any other option) from your script to nvidia-settings.

Exclamation Solved: Problems reading .nvidia-settings.rc

Thank you for your kind help. I haven't been here for a while and so my post comes a little bit late..

Besides to the problem with the latin-1 encoding (thanks Christian) I found another issue and a solution for it:

After changing the encoding nvidia-settings still complains about "Trailing garbage" in "0/RedBrightness=0.080292". I couldn't explain until I changed the decimal-separator from dot to comma (i.e. "0/RedBrightness=0,080292").
After changing this for all the float-values in .nvidia-settings-rc, nvidia-settings doesn't complain any more and worked pretty well.

Here in germany our decimal-separator is usually the comma. So I think, that nvidia-settings expects the float-values to be separated by the local character although it writes them always separated by a dot.

Since the program overwrites the existing .nvidia-settings-rc without a prompt, one should always have a backup of the file ..

I would be grateful, if someone could inform the developer-team (since I don't know how & where) about this bug.

Kind regards,
Frank

That was a good one, thank you. I'm using this to call nvidia-settings:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# nvset: make happy nvidia-settings with commas

rcfile="$HOME/.nvidia-settings-rc"
cat "$rcfile" | sed s/\\./,/ | sed s/,nvidia/\\.nvidia/ > "$rcfile"
nvidia-settings "$@" &

exit

Regards.

Well, it's still there with 1.0-8774. Can we hope to see it solved for next release?
Suse 10.1 uses nvidia-settings is his default xinitrc, so if isn't solved I should make a bug report for them to patch the problem with the LANG trick.

Between, seems to work with any "US" LANG: es_US, en_US...

Future versions of `nvidia-settings` may include the locale that was set at the time the configuration file was written in that configuration file and read it back when the file is parsed. This should help avoid this problem. Please note, however, that the `nvidia-settings` config file parser doesn't prefer one locale over another (or require a specific one), it just doesn't currently handle switches between locales with different floating point formats (e.g. en_US to de_DE or vice versa) very well.

My english is far from perfect, but what do you mean with "switches"?
Code:
~> ls -l test
/bin/ls: test: No existe el fichero o el directorio
~> LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 nvidia-settings --config=test
~> ls -l test
-rw-r--r-- 1 reddwarf users 1069 2006-08-27 17:49 test
~> LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 nvidia-settings --config=test -l

ERROR: Error parsing configuration file 'test' on line 35:
       '0/RedBrightness=0.000000' (Trailing garbage).
~> LANG=es_US nvidia-settings --config=test -l
~>
The file was created and readed with the same locale and fails, I must switch for nvidia-settings to accept it.

@Red69: could you provide the full environment (i.e. the output of `env`) from the shell within which you're seeing this behavior? I can't reproduce it here (on a RHEL4 system), the floating point format used in the configuration file matches the Spanish locale; in fact, I'm seeing the 1.0-8774 parser fail if I force the locale to en_US, as I'd expect it to:
# rm -f config
# LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 nvidia-settings --config=config
# LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 nvidia-settings --config=config -l
# LANG=es_US nvidia-settings --config=config -l

ERROR: Error parsing configuration file 'config' on line 36: '0/RedBrightness=0,000000' (Trailing garbage).
