Ok just got a retail copy, I was VERY dissapointed to see it stutter within a few seconds of starting a new game!!!!! I mean bad stuttering.

Its ironic that the old source engine build used by Ritual in Emergence does'nt stutter for me but this build which I guess is Valve's latest and greatest stutters everytime I bloody move or Alex says something (which is a lot).

Last Valve game for me until thay change engines.

I think Dark Messiah will be my last full Source game.

I wonder what is causing this stuttering as I haven't had a problem with it. At 1280x1024 it might stutter for just a second after loading a level- but from there on untill the next loading point it runs perfectly fine. At 1600x1200 there is some stuttering due to the computer having to do a lot of loading- or so it seems, but as far as I'm concerned it is still playing better at that high a resolution than I ever expected.

Might it be driver related? I'm using the latest beta drivers.

for those getting studdering, try opening the console and putting in "sv_autosave 0" -- that will disable autosaving.

I only get studdering when it autosaves, so disabling it works like a charm for me. Just remember to save your progress yourself!

I'm not saying thats the solution for everyone, but it may help with some of you.

its not drivers or settings or the autosave.......its the source engine.

Maybe its your PC? Many people who originally had stuttering are claiming that its gone now... you seem to be one of the few that still have it.

The only Source Engine game to ever stutter for me was SIN and after a reformat its now running smooth as hell even at 2048x1280.

I dont have stuttering any more either. I had it with the Hidden mod recently, but only in the game menus.

I think HL2:Ep 1 stuttered once (for like a quarter of a second) during the beginning scene, but it hasnt done it since.

Magus... Source is very memory intensive and for some reason it continue to load/unload things from memory and it uses the disk very often. Most of the stuttering problems can be traced to this.

People with less than 1Gb of RAM are more likely to experience hiccups but even with a decent quantity of RAM some PCs are still bound to suffer from the occasional stuttering; some more than other.

The roots of this problem are probably so deep in their code that I don't think there will ever be a complete solution, although it would less noticeable as people move to computers and with more memory.

I dont know, the game doesnt use much ram at all on my system. I was getting between 300 and 500Mb usage on it when playing Episode 1.

Stuters like crazy on my rig when I try and run @ 1920x1600 with only 2AA / 4AF.

I'm starting to wonder if it's SLi related. I even get a little stutter @ 1680X1050, and I know it's not my drives, because I have Raptors...

Do you guys use SLi on HL2 or just disable it? I appoligize for the noob question, but this is my first go at SLi.

it sutters MUCH less at 2xaa but WTF is the point in 2xaa when it runs just as well at 4xaa.

seems to be back buffer related, switching of HDR helps too - again WTF is the point in that, I paid for HDR.
