Well after much messing around im now stable! (apart from rome total war when half the screen goes blank randomly)
Get just under 9000 points in 3dmark06 (8962 i think but at work atm)

This is at 600/1500 fully stable and no artifacting (unlike my XFX 7900GTX Extreme! 690/1750)
Can get it to 625/1600 but haven't tested that out yet, will do it tonight after thai boxing.

Even if it works I will run the card at 600/1500 (maybe 625/1500) as I have had past experiences with memory and video cards, namely I melted the memory chips on an old 5900FX (yes unfortunately I brought one!) a few years back!

These cards clock like hell...

Its a Club3D 7950GX2 btw. (Reference model) For the rest of the system see sig.

Edit;

with a Conroe it wil probably break the 9000 barrier easily.

Idles around 47-50 Degrees C (Machine on for several hours playing games and then surfing etc to have a good indication)

Under load running rthdribl for 30 minutes acheived a max temp of 72 degrees C.

I do have a huge case though with very good cooling and airflow

eVGA 7950
600 MHz Core, 1600MHz ram
I think the ram would go higher, but i can't get it up there. Temperature is around 75C under load
3dmark06 = 9279

ASUS K8N-DL
2xOpteron 854 at 2.9GHz
4G DDR 433 ram 3-3-3-8

Similar to tomb18. Cards run at 600/800 easily. Getting 9268 on 3Dmark06 without pushing the system too hard. GPU1 46C, GPU2 49C at idle. Have to check load temps, yet.

I repeat: IMHO, IMHO

Before you overclock, consider a few things:

1. The gpu speed will scale back if temperatures get high giving you slower performance.

2. Optimizing bottlenecks in your system can give a greater perfomance boost than overclocking alone.

3. Overclocking your cards will require even more power.

After going through this thread and many others, here are some quad SLI tips/conclusions.

1. it works, but you have to have all your ducks in a row.

a. A lot of stable power

b. Fantastic airflow

c. The best or latest motherboard bios for your set up.

d. Use Nvidia reference bios for the cards, both identical
this means the xfx 570 is great, but with the xfx bios it never clocks down in 2d mode. AND overclocked 7950s worked great at 1280 or 1600, but they have aberations at 2560x1600. The nvidia ref bios seems to fix so much.

e. Did you flash the 7950s with the same nvidia reference bios? Distributor bioses (xfx, as example) have small nagging issues, that can become real mountains to overcome. In my own personal case it was the xfx 570 bios, card ran in spec at low resolution, but would run hot when running at 2560x1600. Got much faster performance from the reference bios at 2560x1600.

2. you need a pretty good understanding of how things work.

a. Understanfd the settings in the bios, enable sli master for the primary card, enable NUMA, disable Ecc, enable memhole, tweak mem timings, etc

b. Understand drivers for the quad cards, understand that 1 7950 works without sli enabled, 2 7950s require SLI enabled. Understand the app/games profiles. Understand how to tweak them.

3. Have a monitor big enough to validate the purchase and see the difference.

4. Have enough cpu's and bandwidth to feed the cards.

5. you need a pretty good understanding of how things work (again)

If you are emulating someone's working system, but for some reason it will not work for you, check this first:

a. Do you really have enough power with 50% more to spare?

b. Are your sli power leads from the power supply reallly on seperate rails?

c. Does your power supply provide twice the rail power that two regular high end cards would pull?

d. Do you have enough power (again)

e. Are you using the latest bios?

f. you need a pretty good understanding of how things work

Hope this helps.

Dont these cards actually use the same memory as the GT/GTX? Since the GX2 run at lower mem speeds maybe it wont be a problem..but overclocking the cards might cause a problem..similar to some people getting problems on there GT/GTX...

Oh maybe they have changed / fixed the issue or..they are just fine. Picking up my 7950 this weekend..gave up on the 7900GTX ..gonna miss that sexy cooler..but i wont a working card ><
