Default X Freeze

Hello,

I recently updated to the newest drivers, and am now experiencing random X lockups.

During normal operations, X locks using 100% CPU, and the mouse will still move.

When I run an OpenGL app, even the stock GL screen savers in SuSE, X locks and the mouse locks.

In both situations, I have to hard reset my PC.

I've seen a ton of threads on this, suggesting to disable NvAGP (yes AGPGART is in my kernel), and also disabling RenderAccel. Neither seem to work.

Tonight I enabled TwinView, and the lockups are worse than ever if I drag a movie to the 2nd screen (My TV), it locks as soon as I maximize/fullscreen the movie.

I'm unable to run the error report as my system is totally frozen, and I have no other machine to SSH in.

The same problem occurs when I run Kubuntu 5.10 LIVE DVD.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Jiggs

At least they replied to you LOL! They must be busy with all the posting going on... this is a pretty big issue from what I'm reading.

They'll figure it out eventually... they always do. I'll keep an eye on your thread too!

Thanks

Actually I have discovered what may be a solution. It seems the latest nvidia drivers don't play nicely with older versions of the kernel (i.e. 2.6.9). For now, it seems to run ok when I put noapic in the kernel options in grub.conf. Let me know how it goes for you.

here is my /etc/grub.conf... it doesn't look like any i've seen in my searches.

Code:
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,0) (hd0,0)
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0) (hd0,0)
quit
Any thoughts?

No dice... But thank you for trying!!!

Lock-ups just got worse. I couldn't even run an avi video, it garbled and locked. I've removed the noapic option...

I've also disabled TwinView to help a bit also as it made it worse too.

Back to the drawing board it seems.

Jiggs,
Please generate and post a bug report after experiencing this problem.

Thanks,

Netllama,

I cannot run this as the system is totally frozen.

Is it acceptable to reboot (reset), and run once the system is back up? Or does it have to be run while my system is frozen?

I do not have the means to SSH in to run while X is frozen.

Yes, you can generate the bug report after rebooting, yet before starting X again.

Thanks,

netllama,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I had run the bug report just before my old MX440 video card died, and I had to replace it. I bought a geforce4 FX5200.

I dropped in the FX5200 and switched XORG.CONF to use the previously compiled 'nvidia' driver from the MX440 instead of the SUSE 'nv' driver. It ran, but GL wasn't working. I assumed that my old dying video card was the overall problem, and left it at that. But I was still under the MX440 drivers. It ran fine for a week or two, and I decided to get it running the proper drivers for the FX5200.

So last night I re-compiled the latest drivers (8762) and installed them for the FX5200.

I am now once again seeing the same X freezes as before.

I ran the bug report again yesterday before running X and I have attached it also.

Files:
nvidia-bug-report.log (FX5200)
nvidia-bug-report.log.old (MX440)

Please help!

Cheers
Jiggs

Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS?
Does this problem persist with a more recent kernel (2.6.17.x)?
If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters, does that have any impact?
