Netlama,

Please advise how to enable the "noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters". Do these go in grub.conf/menu.lst?

I'll check on the other options as soon as time permits.

Which do you recommend I check first?

Cheers,
Jiggs

Yes, they should be appended to the end of the kernel entry in grub.conf/menu.lst

Netllama,

Thanks for replying so fast.

I have upgraded my kernel to 2.6.13-15.11-default from SuSE's YOU.

I also removed the 8762 drivers which I installed manually, and used SuSE's YOU to download the latest release 8774 from there, so I don't have to rebuild the drivers after every kernel patch.

So far (knock on wood), the latest drivers are working. I've had OpenGL screen savers running fine, resizing windows and movies works fine, and I indulged in a game of Warcraft3 for a few hours via cedega.

I'm going to play with TwinView later, as that was the fastest way to cause the X freeze; when I ran a movie file in Kaffeine, and DND'd it to my television's display.

I'll keep you aprised.

Many many many thanks!

Netllama,

I apparently spoke far far too soon.

I was in the middle of a Kopete/MSN conversation while posting my last reply. I finished my reply, and was talking in Kopete, then... X locked again.

So far, the only changes were updating my kernel as mentioned below, and using the latest drivers from Yast. I have created a bug report.

While rebooting, I jotted down my BIOS revision, and it is indeed the latest version.

I will try the kernel paramaters later tonight if possible.

Cheers,
Jiggs

* edit -- I have just found out that YOU didn't get the latest 8774 drivers, but actually 7676. So I actually downgraded my drivers before, not upgraded. I am going to manually install the latest 8774 now.

Netllama,

I just installed the 8774 drivers, and booted X.

Not 15 seconds later, I got a kopete message, clicked VIEW, sent a quick message, and closed the dialogue box. The person replied, and I clicked VIEW again. Once the window had re-rendered, X froze.

This is not the first time I have locked X by doing this exact thing in Kopete.

Here is the log from my reboot following this lockup with actual 8774 drivers.

I'll now try the kernel parameters.

Netllama,

I have tried the kernel parameters without luck.

I added 3 boot options as follows to my boot menu:

1. NOAPIC
2. ACPI_OFF
3. BOTH

I booted the first option, and it crashed fast. I rebooted with the same option, and generated:
"nvidia-bug-report_noapic.log"

I then rebooted, and picked the second option. It took more to crash, but alas, it still crashed. I rebooted the same option and generated:
"nvidia-bug-report_acpioff.log"

I then rebooted, and picked the third option. It took even more to crash, but again, still crashed. This was the most stable of the three. Again, I rebooted into option 3, and generated:
"nvidia-bug-report_no-both.log"

I have zipped these logs and attached them for you.

I thought that due to the fact Kopete/Konqeror/Kaffeine were the major app's locking, that it may have been a KDE specific error, so I installed GNOME.

It locked too under option 3 after a while... so there goes the KDE theory.

I have once again gone back to the stock 'nv' drivers.

I find it odd that the old 7676 drivers were more stable than the latest release. I wonder if I go back further if I would find a stable driver?!? (I did have a stable driver when I ran Mandriva2005 a while ago... but I don't know what version it was).

I'm going crazy with these lock-ups... Any insight would be appreciated!!!

Hi Guys,
I also have this issue - but only in multiseat mode.
Using an Intel 975XBLK M/B with 3 PCIx slots and 3 nVidia NX7600GS cards.
M/B has latest 1334 BIOS, have upgraded to all the latest ubuntu 6.06 offerings and just compiled and installed 8774 drivers.
Has never hung using the "normal" gdm & xorg conf files, but hangs (1 by 1) when I use the 3-seat conf files. I'm using drivers evdev for the keyboards and mouse for the mice - which are all logitech EX110 usb cordless desktops.

I hope this extra info helps someone to get to the bottom of this, as it has been bugging me for months.

Cheers & thanks,
Zoltan

@Zoltan: if you're using a 32-bit kernel and a multi-core CPU, please see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498 (the first bullet item).

Ouch! - sorry - it is there.

I posted my uname -r before looking at your pointer (sorry)

I'll go through the whole section in 3 hours or so, after the staff have logged off the PCs.

I'll post again there after.

Thanks for the nose-rub
