Default SuSe 10.1, GeForce XF 5200 install

Hello all,
I have recently purchased the GeForce XF 5200 card. I have not yet installed it. I need to know if there is anything special that I need to do to properly install this card. Since SuSe Linux 10.1 with KDE is already installed, what are the expected problems? I am thinking to simply turn off the computer, pull the old card and insert the new one. Boot into Linux and let it detect the card. Will this happen without incident? I realize that I will have to install the new Nvidia drivers post installation of the card. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

You can use the Yast Online Update function to download a suitable driver.
This will not get you the newest version, but you won't have to dance with textmode and have to worry about re-installing the driver when you update the Linux kernel.
When you really want to use the newest nvidia driver, follow the instructions that come with it.

When you have only one computer, and you want to use the nvidia driver, I recommend you to download the driver and save it somewhere before you swap the card. Downloading the driver with a non-working graphic display is very difficult.

I'm currently using the same graphics card with suse 10.1. It works flawlessly and has decent performance. When you use Yast to download the nvidia installer (if it isn't already there by default). You will have a file called /usr/bin/tiny-nvidia-installer. You must execute this command as root without X running. You will have the choice to download the full installer, just say yes and let the script do everything for you. It's easiest to let the script modify your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file also.

marchetto, as others are using the nvidia X driver with SuSE-10.1 without problems (and I tested it earlier this week, also without problems), it seems that whatever is wrong, is specific to your environment.

Since you're using SuSE's installation script, I'd suggest reporting this problem back to SuSE.

Thanks,
Lonni

I don't know what's going on... the driver seems to be right installed. But openGL is not started, fonts are strangely drawed and the system is not reactive like on SuSE 10.0

On a dmesg you can read that the nVidia module is not compatible with Novell system

I definetely don't know what's happening, and how to solve this.

GoogleEarth is really slow. If I start OpenOffice I've a really strange unfocused text of menubar...

How to have my Linux OS with a normal graphic interface?

The dmesg GPL warning that you're seeing is to be expected, and isn't the reason why you're having any of the other issues you're reporting. If you're having issues with SuSE-10.1 when using the official NVIDIA 1.0-8762 driver package, then please start a new thread with a bug report which captures the problems.

Thanks,
Lonni
