It has been sayed that modelines has nothing to do with PAL and NTSC video out via composite or svideo.
Nvidia binary drivers will just ignore them.

i've been fiddling with modelines for hours on my tv. thanks for the tip that apparently the reason they weren't doing anything is because they don't. arg...

did any of you figure out how to change the size? for me, even overscan in xorg.conf does nothing. frustrating.

that does not work on my machine... and even
nvidia-xconfig --tv-over-scan=0.5
gives me only a line in xorg.conf... but nothing applies, and overscan seems impossible. have been on the issue for days now and i resolved it by giving VLC custom width and height under preferences->video to solve the movie watching issue. it doesn't zoom the desktop, but it adjusts the movie perfectly.

on my older 6800 card overscan works perfectly though.

I think this is the sort of thing that is the achilles heel of Linux. Nobody is in charge.

This problem could be fixed by Nvidia, Xorg, or gdm/kdm/xdm etc.

Windows Vista can adjust the desktop size and position just fine, and it is documented in Nvidia's Windows driver.

Maybe it's time I started learning the internals of gdm and submit a patch. I have a ways to go on that.
