Now X is segfaulting just trying to load the glx module. Did you verify the md5sum for the new installation?

Default Re: impossible to install 8762 driver

the md5sum is the same of the old installation:
Code:
pepz@ubuntu:~$ md5sum /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
330c9fcebe3f724ddc694c834869c0be /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
how can i uninstall all and reinstall the driver?
./nvidia-installer --uninstall?
in italian ubuntu forum an user said to complete the installation with the script that i used with this command:
Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8672-pgk1.run -a --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules
is it right?
i also inserted this in /etc/modprobe.d/options file:
Code:
options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=4
as written in tseliot guide for my graphic card, the guide that i followed
bye
thanks

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8672-pgk1.run --uninstall
uninstalls the driver.

This doesn't look like an issue that requires the --x-module-path, however you could certainly try using it if you'd like.

At this point, I'd wonder if the driver package that you've downloaded is corrupt. It should have an md5sum of 86bcf4a3a9d441dff9e25b82ec8a6060.

Thanks,
Lonni

i have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it...
Now X starts, but it after few seconds freeze...
I've problems with the recovery mode, too...
So, IMHO, X doesn't crash completely...
this is my new xorg:
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Was X started in single user mode, or from a normal bootup? It looks like part of the problem above was related to framebuffer modules.

Also, have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS?

Thanks,
Lonni

i don't say if in that case it is a normal boot or single user mode...
now i've tried again and the new bug-report is in recovery mode, because i can't run nvidia-bug-report cause the system freeze:
the errors are the same, but letters and numbers between parenthesis are different...
how can ia check my bios version? and eventually update it?
thanks a lot

Ubuntu typically sets up a framebuffer at boot, which might be the cause of the problem you're having. If you boot to runlevel 3 and generate a bug report after a crash, instead of 1, then I'd be able to determine which kernel boot parmeters you're normally getting when this crashes.

You'd need to go to Asus's website for BIOS update information.

Thanks,
Lonni

This bug report was also generated in single user mode, however I don't see any problems in this bug report. You'll need to generate a bug report in runlevel 2 or 3.

Also what is the "firestarter gui"?

Thanks,
Lonni

this bug-report was generated at runlevel 3...
i'm sure cause i changed the default runlevel in inittab...
you don't see problem in the bug report cause the system freeze a few second after bug-report generating...
firestarter is gtk program for managing and observing firewall; this is the new bug-report generated at runlevel 3, after the last crash

According to your bug report, you booted into single user mode not runlevel 3:
/proc/cmdline
root=/dev/hda2 ro single

The latest bug report looks the same as the rest, X is still crashing going through some fb code paths. At this point, my only guesses are that the nvidia X driver isn't installed correctly, or something else is unique about your environment, as no one else running Ubuntu has reported this problem.
