Default Movies not 5.1 Sound?

I was watching a movie and I realized that my 5.1 Sound isn't working for it. My PC is configured properly and even the Nvidia SPeaker Setup works but when trying to watch a movie I don't get the Surround Sound at all.

I tested it on a handful of movies with none of them working, I used Star Wars Trash Compactor scene, Batman Begins and even Saving Private Ryan...

Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?

My sound card is the onboard Nvidia nForce 4... Im not a big audio ***** but I like Surround Sound.

Try a different AC3 or DTS decoder such as ffdshow.

Yeah I think I solved the issue, ffdshow was bugged and wouldn't hold the config. A reinstall of the codec pack fixed it.

Which codec pack are you using? I use K-lite standard and it has a tool under the start menu to reset ffdshow to default settings.

Im forced to use Combined Community Codec Pack since some of my anime only works under it. I only have K-Lites encoding part installed.

BTW know how to configure ffdshow video for best display? I know you use post processing, I had a website with a step by step but I lost the bookmark after a format.

Depends on the video source really. I don't really have any specific settings I live by.

I did once attempt to upconvert DVD to 720p though. But that was just to test. I haven't actually hooked up my PC to my HDTV yet (don't have a DVI cable long enough).

Nice guide. This is very similar to the process I used to upconvert DVD to 1280 x 720 with ffdshow. Except I used the free Media Player Classic program.

Just curious, do you use the Sonic Cineplayer decoder mentioned in that guide? Or something else such as Purevideo? I've heard good things about TheaterTek before, but I wonder which decoder will actually look best on NVIDIA cards.

I use the Cineplayer decoder... It's my favorite DVD Decoder, I think it looks better then Purevideo.

I use Media Player Classic for my player since I disliked the free vesion of Zoomplayer and don't want to pay for something that I might dislike for DVDs.

Hmm. Check this out. I noticed this over on theatertek site.

These provide the highest video and audio quality available, producing a stunning DVD playback experience for both NTSC and PAL format DVD's

In the ffdshow guide it said the decoder was made by Sonic Cineplayer. Seems kind of odd wouldn't you say?

I see.

Things must have changed since 2004, because according to page 1 of the ffdshow dvd guide, Theatertek DVD used to include the CinePlayer Decoder Pack.

Quote:
The Sonic Cineplayer DVD pack is what TheaterTek DVD uses for play back of DVDs. This is one of the easiest codecs to use and configure in Zoom Player Pro. It is also known for it's excellent image quality. To top it off if you need to buy it it's only $14.95 direct from Sonic.
I just downloaded and installed the Theatertek trial but there doesn't seem to be any CinePlayer DVD Decoder on my system.
