Question Black blank screens (video signal loss) problem...

Hello.

This morning, I was watching http://homestarrunner.com/weclomeback.html (a new one; not gaming)... and then my monitor went blank BLACK. I heard my Audigy 2 ZS' sound get stuck (loop). Pinging to my computer from another computer on the network failed. Samsung 17" CRT monitor's video signal light blinking (missing picture). I hard resetted the computer. Nothing came up. I got worried. I turned off the computer (not PSU switch). I turned it back on, it was fine. I looked around in CMOS to see the temperatures (11x degrees (F) in Athlon 64 3200+ 754 CPU; 100 degrees(F) on motherboard sensor). Nothing odd (normal).

I rebooted and go back to Windows. I saw the splash screen and it hung to blackness with video signal loss. Rebooted. Still dead (nothing came up). Turned it off, things came back normally, and I went to XP in safe mode. XP looked OK. No disk issues, no weird errors in event logs, etc.

I rebooted again and idled at the Grub bootloader for about five minutes. I went to watch that HomestarRunner link because I got interrupted rudely. Then, I let XP boot up and I was in!

I saw a NVIDIA driver (91.31) message telling me that my temperatures are currently normal (huh? why tell me that?). I went to screen capture it and loaded up Paint Shop Pro v8. I pasted and about to save, and then bam! Black screen again! Pinging this box stopped right after the black screen.

I hard resetted, then nothing showed up. Turned off the machine and powered back on, still nothing. Turned off the machine including its PSU. Waited a few minutes (went to restroom).

Switched PSU to on and computer came to life. I went to XP in safe mode. I decided to try something: Uninstall NVIDIA 91.31 driver and reinstalled the last older version (84.21). Maybe 91.31 has problems.

NOPE! Same problem, but without any NVIDIA drivers!! I was in my XP desktop right after logging in when the blank black screen returned. However, I can keep pinging my computer and SSH in it. I am in XP without a screen. I was able to shut down normally/safely with alt-f4 and hot keys.

I already tried changing DVI -> VGA adapter and connecting CRT monitor directly to the computer (skipping KVM switch box).

Man, I don't know what the heck is going on. It's not even that hot. It's only 81F in here right now at before 9 AM PDT. I had no problems yesterday evening when gaming (1.5 hours of Prey demo) when it was a lot hotter! I wonder if it is even heat related. If it is sounds like heat, then what type of cooler do I need for it? I have no room for two slots because I have tons of other PCI cards in my case.I saw no symptoms of graphic problems, etc.

My primary/gaming machine specifications are at
http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm.../computers.txt ... Thank you in advance.

A friend of mine sent me this interesting old forum thread:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=59391 ... However, I have see the blank black problem outside of games and without NVIDIA driver before.

Oh well, I RMA'ed the card yesterday to get the third card from XFX. [sighs]

Default Re: Black blank screens (video signal loss) problem...

I finally got my third card back after a long RMA and delays. It still gave me video signal loss problems, but my hardware friend was around to see the reproducable symptoms. He tried connected the power cable directly to the power supply rail/leads by removing the one extension. So far, this is holding I hope!

I find that odd since I never had that problem with the first nine months until my card decided to die.
