Default system completely crashes

First, i'm using 8762 nvidia drivers, on a kernel 2.6.17-1.2139_FC5.
The nvidia drivers came from the livna.org Fedora Core 5 repository. I've been told I should use them and not the nvidia installer.

Here's my problem.
I can boot the system fine, `modprobe nvidia` works fine.
However, as soon as I start X, the system completely and totally locks up. Can't log in remotely, Can't ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X, can't ctrl-alt-del to restart, can't ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal. Basically, everything is dead.

On the "read first" page, it says I should include the nvidia-bug-report.sh output log, but how can I run that if the system is totally locked up? Is it still useful after a reboot?

I do have what I think is probably useful. Its the output of /var/log/messages that is written when the crash occurs.

I'll attach the Xorg.0.log file from during startup as well.

Ok, i'm attaching two files.

The first one I generated before running startx.

The second was done like this:
sleep 15 && nvidia-bug-report.sh &
startx
(wait 15 seconds before rebooting).
Its called nvidia-bug-report-after.log

nvidia-bug-report-after.log is only 659 bytes long. You'll need to generate that log after rebooting, yet before starting X again.

Additionally, please verify whether any of the following have any impact:
0) Booting with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters
1) Setting NvAGP to 0 in org.conf
2) A newer BIOS
3) Setting RenderAccel to False in xorg.conf

Thanks,
Lonni

The file entitled nvidia-bug-report.log is generated after a reboot and before X has been started again. The -after file is the one that is generated as X tries to start.

I have tried all of the above with the exception of the newer BIOS, due to a lack of a floppy drive required to update with. There is no change.

I was having a very similar issue. The login screen was fine, but once the user finished entering their password things froze up.

I found that running "chcon -t texrel_shlib_t /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.8762" would get me further. Though once I started firefox things locked up.

I turned off the SeLinux monitoring:
edit /etc/selinux/config and set SELINUX=disabled

Things are currently working fine.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for posting. I do not use selinux on my system (selinux=disabled), but thanks anyways.

I've got the exact same issue. Right after installing FC5, I tried both the nvidia drivers from livna and the drivers from nvidia.com. Both lock up linux completely after I init 5.

I'm running a GeForce 6100 on a Gigabyte MiniATX motherboard.
kernel is 2.6.17-1.2139
selinux disabled

malamber, please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log, and verify that you're using the latest BIOS.

Thanks,
Lonni
