Question 10,300 3DMark2001SE any good for TI 4200?

Hey guys, is that score good for a G4 TI4200 at stock speed?
Also, if I moderately OC this card, what speeds can I expect to reach?
Thanks!

Here's a suggestion that I know will be echoed by a vast number of other members:

How about you not worry about 3dmark and use your new card to play real games like GTA3, Jedi Knight II, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege or whatever strikes your fancy? Use the card for what it was designed for - to maximize your gameplay experience at a budget price.

3dmark has little to no credibility in the eyes of most of us around here. All I've ever done with it lately is put it on an infinite loop to test for system stability and that's about all I've found it to be good for. And there are other programs that can stress a computer's subsystems that aren't 40+ megs to download.

Well, then excuse me for asking such an insignificant question.
BTW, I do play JKII!

You're excused. But seriously, does JKII play well? Good framerates at high resolution or at lower resolutions with FSAA and anisotropic filtering enabled? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then that's really all that matters.

But since you're sooo curious, as long as you have your mip-map detail set to best quality in your D3D control panel then yes, your score is good. Happy?

If you want to know if that's a good score, go check out the online results browser...that's what it's for!

I base my performance if I can play at full eye-candy at good framerates, when I can't, I upgrade...I do the same as saturn, use 3DMark as a stability test only...

I usually play JKII at 1600x1200-no FSAA-8xAniso-set to best image quality in Direct 3D settings. Oh yeah, and all in-game options juiced!

I think it runs great! Can't give you actual framerates though, as I havn't ran it with FRAPS. It looks great though as far as I can tell. That's why I havn't bothered.

Thanks for your replies fellas, but seriously, did you have to be such asses about it. This is my first post on this forum, and if this is how all the new members are treated, I may not post again.

This is a message I want to send to every person who views and signs up for this message board, be them a new member or a seasoned nV veteran:

In the over 18 months that I've been a part of this community, the number of threads where people come in asking about their 3dmark score has to number in the hundreds. The threads that have talked about 3dmark scores that are here right now are a mere microcosm of what used to be on this message board.

2 pages here

Here

Here

Counting this one, out of 10 total threads in this forum, 4 talk about 3dmark scores. There is more to life than this simple, synthetic benchmark (that quite a few people cheat on anyway - not saying that you personally do it, but you can't deny that it's done).

You say your games play well, that's what it's all about. After all, NVIDIA's slogan is "The way it's meant to be played" not "The way it's meant to be benchmarked." The latter should be ATI's slogan.

saturnotaku,
I can understand your feelings of contempt and weariness on the subject of 3DMark scores. EVERYONE seems to post a thread about their scores. Believe it or not, this was the first time I've used 3DMark to benchmark my system/video performance. I wasn't trying to bore anyone with my results. I was just excited to score over 10k on the bench. Furthermore, I have used the online result browser, but I wanted more than just seeing the numbers, because as you said, the bench can be cheated. I felt the best way to judge my score was by the opinion of my peers.

Afterall, this IS Benchmark Central!

I appreciate you seeing this from my perspective and I apologize if it sounded like I came down on you personally. I really didn't mean it that way, it was more of venting after a really, really, really hard week at work that seeing another thread on 3dmark just was kinda the straw that broke the camel's back.

But to comment on what I quoted you on there, I know this is Benchmark Central, but there are other benchmarks we can talk about. JKII for instance, the game you (and I) play. Also there's Comanche 4, Sysmark and a whole laundry list of others. Unfortunately, there are a whole lot of people who live and die by Madfunyon's mark and if they don't score above a certain point they feel as if their manhood is threatened. I feel sorry for those people, I really do because as I'm wreaking havoc in GTA3, these folks are trying to take some computer Viagra so they can brag to a bunch of faceless forum slugs who won't give a crap after about 2 minutes.

God, what a crappy week I've had. I think I'm gonna follow my own advice and play some games. GTA3, here I come.

Incidentally and this is off-topic - how do you like that Soltek motherboard? I'm thinking about getting their new VIA Pentium 4 and I'd appreciate some feedback about the company before I make such a decision.

saturnotaku,
Where do you work? What do you do? Just curious.

As far as the Soltek board, I like it alot. This is the first time that I've ever bought Soltek, and it really performs well. However, it's a pretty basic board design.(no RAID, USB2.0, or 5.1 audio) But to those of us who don't need all that, it offers great performance! Very stable. Except when you push that FSB as far as you possibly can. I wish my Athlon XP was unlocked! You'll be happy as long as you don't won't all those bells and whistles.

I'm a newspaper reporter who just worked close to a 70-hour week of controversy and a whole lot of other crap I really didn't want to deal with.

And thanx for the info on the Soltek board. I'm not into a whole lot of frills so I think their P4 one should be really good (supports the 533 fsb P4 chips and 8x AGP). Plus it's only $100.

I love people who trash talk 3dmark like it has nothing to do with PC performance at all.

Elitists is what I like to call them.

I also love how they pretend that a 5,000 score compared to a 12,000 score has absolutely nothing to do with your computers performance... There is no difference in their minds.
