Default FX 5700VE Fan stops when in console and does not start again

I purchased a GeForce FX 5700VE at the start of the year and a couple of month ago I notice for bizarre reasons it would get extremely hot, then I worked out that it was because the fan had actually stopped spinning when I entered console (Ctrl alt F1) or restarted the X server and the fan does not start again when I return to the GUI.

I have used Ubuntu Breezy (with hand installed 8756 drivers) and Ubuntu Dapper (with Debian Repo 8762 package).

The nvidia-bug-report.log attached is with the fan going.

Attached log of after going into console then back again (and promptly rebooting).

It doesn't completely solve your problem but the nvclock program can adjust the fan speed of some cards. Search this forum for it.
