What's the deal? These drivers (3123s) work fine on my P3 1GHz, but not on my P4 1.6

I am running Mandrake 9.0 with the following setup:

Motherboard: PC-Chips M920
CPU: Pentium 4 Williamette 1.6GHz
RAM: 512MB PC133
Video: Eagle GeForce 4 MX440 64MB AGP4x

I have tried all possible combinations on your driver site, used the NVchooser.sh file, installed from src.rpm, rpm, and tar.gz, tried the drivers that came with my card, and followed the README instructions exactly. No matter what I do, X-Windows will NOT start. It errors out with "(EE) Failed to initialize nvidia kernel module!"

This is not your fault. As I mentioned before, these same drivers (the 3123s) have installed perfectly on my P3 1GHz, and I am QUITE satisfied with them. I have been a fan of NVIDIA ever since the Riva TNT2, which, btw, I still have installed in a P2 300 in perfect working order. But for some reason, these drivers refuse to work properly on my P4.

One more thing. Since I installed from .tar.gz, I cannot remove them using rpm -e NVIDIA_GLX and rpm -e NVIDIA_kernel. How do I uninstall these drivers properly? Can I just delete the entire directories?

Nevermind guys. For those of you having the same problem as me, here's a little piece of advice:

I stumbled upon a post by bwkaz, who is apparently one of the admins of this forum. He suggested in another thread that we check to make sure PNP OS is set to Off, and Allocate memory to PCI VGA is set to On. Needless to say, the NVIDIA splash screen came right up after delaying about a minute.

Not an admin, I've just been using the drivers for quite some time.

Happy to help, in any case. That was what I was going to say here, too -- check dmesg for the reason the driver won't initialize, and you'll probably come up with PnP OS/Assign IRQ.
